Shades of Green's changes since the pandemic

A few years ago I would say that it was one of my favorite resorts. It's fallen down the list for me. The closure of the walkway makes things cumbersome. Being able to walk over to the Polynesian was wonderful. It's an ok resort that just needs a little more to be great. The grounds are beautiful though. It's very well maintained. I always see people out working on it.
Understood but the issues with the walkway are Disney's doing not AAFES, DOD or SoG.

We are staying for the first time in January, curious to hear others thoughts of recent trips. I've watched several you tube videos and it looks beautiful.
My family has been staying at SoG since 1996 or 1997, with the occasional stays at a Disney owned resort. The thing I love the most about SoG is the room size and the price you pay for them. It is a laid back resort so it is a nice escape from the hustle and bustle of the parks. Food quality is not what it used to be but is edible! Evergreens back in the day was awesome. For my family, the only real negative about our recent stays there is the closure of the walkway to the Polynesian. We would always walk to the Polynesian or the TTC to catch the monorail and frequently get something to eat at the Poly. We drive to the parks more, now. Leaving the MK after the Fourth of July fireworks and waiting for the SoG bus was a mess….a huge mess.

It’s amazing to learn that an earnings reports is not in fact about a company’s profits.
Looked it up. In order to avoid looking like a for-profit enterprise, the AAES uses terms like
  • Cash and cash equivalents at end of year
  • Net cash
  • Net earnings

The Exchange utilizes accounting principles generally accepted in the U.S. (U.S. GAAP)
applicable to “for-profit” organizations because of the nature of its commercial-type operations.
The Exchange’s financial statements include the operations of all Exchange activities worldwide.

I'm not sure how many people on here have stayed at SoG but I wanted to get some thoughts from other on the resort's changes in the last couple years. The dinner buffet has been replaced with takeout, the main lunch place now closes an hour earlier, and the popular walkway is now completely gone. Instead of making quality of life improvements, Disney (or is it DoD?) is going in the opposite direction. You'd think that since the walkway was closed they would allow guests to drive over to the Polynesian and park but nope. What's the future of this resort? Just curious what

So, as people have pointed out, SOG / Army owns the buildings and runs the resort. Disney owns the land and controls the land. This includes roadways and sidewalks. Disney, also with The Arnold Palmer Group, runs the Golf Courses that surround SOG.

Changes are made based on guest demands and requests as well as the cost of doing business. If you feel like you want the buffet back, I would include that in an email to SOG via their website. Changes to hours happen when people are not using the facilities.

While SOG was not made to create huge profits, they do, as Mom said, have to come in the black. They are NAF and do not receive funding. While there is an AAFES on site. SOG is an AFRC. All money collected from SOG is used to support the 4 AFRCs around the globe.

As far as the sidewalk. That was a safety decision made by Disney. If you look here in the forms, there are posts showing the permits for the expansion of World Drive. The small two-lane road in front of SOG will become a 4 lane highway with higher speeds. This will no longer be safe for guests to cross. SOG provides a free bus service to their guest to the Disney theme parks, water parks, & Disney Springs.

If you have issues with SoG, don't go blaming AAFES. SoG is owned and run by Armed Forces Recreation Centers (AFRC), part of Army Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR). Army's Installation Management Command (IMCOM) owns and runs Army MWR. The Army Materiel Command (AMC) owns IMCOM. As for AAFES, although revenues from AAFES retail activities support Army and Air Force MWR programs, AAFES doesn't own or operate Service MWR facilities except on a contracted basis. From their website -- their Chain of Command:

Incidentally, since the late 1990's/early 2000's, most base-level MWR facilities have been forced to operate as self-sustaining activities, putting any such activity that can't earn its own keep on the chopping block, hence the discussion of margins vs revenue vs profits. Angels on pins as far as I am concerned. If Shades stops supporting itself, that sucker will disappear faster than leftover churros at MK closing time.

Me, Myself and I have absolutely no issues with SoG, none. Issues with Disney management and organization definitely, not with DoD, AAFES, MWR or SoG. Glad you looked up the website and educated yourself, I wish more people would likewise educate themselves. Shades is not disappearing due to lack of funding, take that to the bank.

I already knew; I looked it up for you -- you seemed to think AAFES ran SoG. It's solely an Army thing but it's open to the rest of DoD.

And if it turns into a money pit, it'll be gone like the post photo hobby shop.
