i heard rumors about the arm over shapeship earth being taken down. i think it was on this site but i couldn't find it again when i looked. my question is what will happen to the aircraft warning beacon, if the arm is removed the WDW will not have any beacon on property.

I'm not quite sure I understand your question.

Objects only have to have a red beacon on them if they are over 200ft tall. (Hence Tower of Terror being 199ft tall, maybe Everest as well).

Surely it's a good thing not to have a beacon, as it distracts from any illusion? :)

While there have been lots of "wishfull thinking" rumors of the wand being taken down, I dont think it has ever really been likely, much in the same way as the hat at MGM. It was engineered and installed to last for a long time, and I dont see it going anywhere soon. WDW management, and many regular guests like these huge icons, despite what many of the fans think.

it398 - I get it. The aircraft beacon is on the arm since its height is well over the 200ft level where a building requires a beacon by law. Since SSE is only 180ft tall, it dosn`t require a beacon by itself, as it was before the arm went up.

when i spoke to a cast member during my last visit to wdw in 2002, he told me that wdw were asked to consider a permenant aircraft warning beacon at wdw when they were designing ToT. The imagineers did not like the idea of putting it on the ToT hence it is only 199 feet tall and instead added it to the 2000 arm at epcot when they were designing it. i therefore cannot see how they can remove the arm without moving the beacon elsewhere in wdw.

One beacon to "mark" WDW is unrealistic. As a pilot, just because one landmark has a beacon doesn't mean you'll 'miss' the other landmarks that are just as tall.
Also, the two icons are well apart from each other. That's why the law says any structure over 200' must have it's own marker.

Doesn't the flag on top of EE make the structure taller then 200, since the flag is taller then a foot. :lookaroun

Could you imagine someone complaining that their is no light on top of the flag since it pierces the 200ft mark.
