Seriously-how do you afford it?

We always call Disney multiple times for deals, look to websites like this one and Mousesavers.com, and use the unofficial guide as a resource. I buy multi-day tickets with no expiration and use a few days each year. We never go to the parks 5 days straight because it kills us. The last time I purchased 7 day hoppers and went two years (3 days and 4 days). I have stayed on site and off site, and either is fine because we usually go during the busier times and don't care about the EMH perk. (I avoid the park that is offering the morning hours!). I look for hotels that have a nice pool, and a place to ease back and relax. You can stay at nice places for between 75 and 125 per night if you look for deals.

We eat at one nice restaurant per day, and snack the rest. Usually McDonalds for breakfast (Either the one by the AK or the one by Goodings). I know exactly what each restaurant costs because I am a frequent visitor.

The whole thing usually costs us between 2,000 and 3,000 for a week each year. I spent 5,000 on my first visit years ago, and not since. The tickets are included in that and the cost of those are spread out over the previous year or two.

This year we spent 4 days (three days in the parks)

I had the tickets, but they were about 30 bucks a day per person.

Daily costs:

Daily tickets: 120.00
One nice meal 125.00
Breakfast at McD. 25.00
Daily Snacks. 50.00
Hotel: 140.00
Misc. Shopping / day. 50.00.

That was 500.00 per day on park days, and one extra night in a hotel. For 4 days it was about 2200.00. You can do it cheaper too, but we really like eating at one nice restaurant every day. You could knock off 50 bucks per day if you didn't do that. You can also stay in much cheaper hotels. We have paid as little as 70 dollars per day (including tax) for a cheaper place to sleep. In recent years I have stayed in nicer places though.

Of course, you still have transportation costs. We drive to Florida to visit my parents every year, so I never figure that because I have to spend it anyway.

It's expensive no matter what you do, but you don't have to spend 5 grand.

4 day hopper $250 that expires, about $625 for 7 days in a room in a value resort ($80 plus tax/day), meals for one person $350 for meals for 7 days, comes to $1225 for one person. Depending on transportation add how you travel. You could find a cheaper room offsite, stay less days, eat cheaper and travel for the most $1000 plus travel to get there.

I don't think you guys are tkaing in to account the fact that some people aren't in a position to go 2-3 times a year. The reason they scrimp and save for so long is to make that one trip unforgettable. It's such a bonus to come away with all the souvenirs, as daft as they all are, but the last thing I'd want is to be penny-pinching as I go round the parks depriving myself, or my family, of things just to budget!

You never quite know what's round the corner so why not make the most of you're time there...after all, you can't take it with you!

but that was the original question of the thread, how do we go muliple times a year? we cut cost where we want to and can. For the people who go every year or multiple times a year it isn't once in a lifetime trip.

I agree with others, maybe if we knew a little more about why it cost you $5000 we might be able to help more directly. If you are coming from out of the country, or there are no good airline deals flying from your city and you're stayin all in deluxe hotels, maybe that would be possible, but it's tough to know for sure from your message.

I have travelled to Disney alone and with friends and family, and I have never paid more than $1800 for an entire week - and that's even splurging on a couple of the trips and staying in a moderate or Deluxe and having some pricey meals and being a little loose with the wallet when shopping. I spent about $1600 on my trip last May for 5 days, stayed at the Coronado, and had one dinner or lunch at a more expensive hotel restaraunt or in park dining, a few breakfast buffets, but didn't go wild on shopping this time. My hotel/park tickets package was under $900, and my airfare was around $160.

Definitely get an email dialog going with Marie (wannabebelle). She's probably one of the most knowledgeable folks on these boards about it. I've always used a travel agent through AAA, and always gotten some affordable prices, even staying on property. Without knowing more, I'd say shop for the cheapest airline tickets, buy well in advance, go during non-peak times to Disney, as another said (dont nickle and dime yourself to death), stay on property and dont get a rental car, and mainly: PLAN PLAN PLAN AHEAD :)

I agree the original post was posing the question of how can some of you guys afford to go multiple times a year...and I didn't mean to dispute that. But I think you'll find that to fly from the UK and stay on-site costs upwards of about £850 (roughly $1400) and that's before you've budgeted for you're multi-passes and spending/food money. You can get cheaper from last minute sites or family package discounts but the majority of the time you need to book though an agent. Staying off-site is slightly cheaper but for what you save in accomodation, you invariably make up again travelling to and from WDW.

I don't wish to come over as complaining...I'm happy to save and budget so I can afford everything once I'm there. I'm coming in October and it'll be my first visit for almost 5 years so I'm thrilled to be returning. It just appears that US based vacation packages offer better deals...

Out of interest, could anyone tell me if they've heard of an Ultimate Ticket and, if so, how much a 14-day version would cost over there? I'm having to say about £165/$280 each (I need another for my gf!) and that gives us un-limited access to all the parks, including TP and BB, as well as DownTown Disney and Pleasure Island etc for our entire 2-week visit! Are these tickets available in the US?

We never pinch pennies on our trips - but we also don't go crazy on the souvenirs either... honestly it all goes into a junk drawer when we get home anyway - I do however like to drop a good bit of cash at the scrapbook store - now there I can put a serious dent in my wallet ;) but our trips are always unforgettable... pictures and scrapbooks last a long time... so that's where we spend our $$ -

Just don't think that those of us that go 2-3 times a year are pinchin - budgeting and pinching pennies are 2 totally different things! :) We budget enough to have a great time! :) but we don't spend foolishly... (did that make sense?) :D

It makes perfect sense...I don't think what I'm trying to say is coming over quite as I intended. Bottom line is, everyone should be able to experience WDW and all it has to offer at least once...as you so rightly say, the memories last forever whether you indulge or budget.

I think I was just trying to back up the original post users questions by explaining that it can be costly, budget or no budget, travelling for other countries, in my case, the UK. For families it can really escelate! I'm just thankful that I don't have any kids yet... I'm childish enough to be getting on with!

We go every 1.5 years, but could probably go once a year. We are a family of four and for a week it is about $1500. We always go through AAA and drive.

Just to get a general concenus, do ya'll find that AAA has the best rates or is there someone considerably better?

you are so right - we just had our first - I figure we have the next three years before we have to start paying for her - live it up! ;)

Also,It is a good bit more expensive when you count in the UK airfare... your right! that could play a huge part in why some people only go once a year... :animwink:

The type of tickets you buy in the UK cannot be purchased here in the US. I remember there was a thread a while back where one of the members who lives in the UK buys his tickets. The website is www.themepark-tickets.com.

I don't know if you are aware that UK folks can book your hotel through a US travel agent which can save you money because of the exchange rate and there are no fees at Kingdom Konsultants like some other agencies.

I know I go to Disney 3-4 times a year and I have never paid $5k. I took my nephew two summers ago for 5 nights and it cost me about $1,400 (air $350, hotel $350, his ticket $175, car rental $150). Granted I have an AP, so I was able to get a deal on the hotel, we stayed at Pop Century. I wanted to have a great trip for him because he was without his family, but in order for me to make this trip a little more affordable and have more money for souvieners for him, I opted for staying at Pop Century rather than one of the other hotels.

How I squeezed another trip in for this year:

Using DH travel points for free stay at Swan....OK, not everyone can do this but I passed up a romantic cruise for the 2 of us so we could use the points for WDW! LOL

Bought 10 day non-exp , park hopping, plus tickets. Can use 5 of the days plus some of the plusses this year, then have the rest for our vist in 2007.

Bring snacks with you: I pack small cereal boxes, fruit snacks, small packs of cookies, crystal light to add to bottled water etc. Great for room and pack at parks. Also, taking advantage of free grocery stop from Quicksilver limo to get bottled water, juice, fruit etc. If you drive....bring this stuff with you (and a cooler) This saves big money.

As I get extra money (Yard sale, rebates, BDay etc) I get Disney Dollars so it doesn't dissapear. I also have relatives get kids Disney Dollars for BDay, Christmas etc. The kids have at least $100 each now, plus I have a few hundred.

Disney Rewards Visa.....use the card for everything (just make sure you pay it off each month) Turn rewards into Disney Dollars.... we will have over $400 for this trip (don't do the math!!LOL)

Bought tradeable pins from Ebay in lots so I don't have to shell out $9 plus for a pin the kids will hand over right away. Most of these are Cast Lanyard pins so there are excellent traders and average around $4 a piece.

I gave up remodeling the downstairs bathroom to pay for plane tickets...it all comes to priorities and since the Broom isn't in shambles, I would rather go to Disney.

Plus all of the great ideas others have posted.... I look on Mousesavers, Allearsnet, this site, guidebooks etc for more ideas.

45 days to go....:D

We don't penny pinch on the trip, we will have some very nice sit-down meals, character dinners, buy stuff, kids going on Piracte's Cruise etc but we try to spend wisely (like buying case of bottled water saves a bunch!)

Also, there are reasonable places to eat that aren't that expensive on property. One of my favorites is Tusker House in Animal Kingdom. You can get a turkey wrap, bowl of corn chowder and some grapes for less than ten bucks (it might be around 7 or $8). Also, look into the moderate resorts.

I know that I just about had a seizure when Disney came out with its Dining Plus option. My family can save a lot of money by using it. I would bet that your family too could really save some big bucks by using the plan wisely (go to mousesavers.com for suggestions). What I like most about the option is that almost everything is paid for once you get to WDW. You don't have to pinch pennies when you're in the park. I also concurr with the moderate resort idea. We stayed at a value resort once and think there's a world of difference between value to moderate. However, I don't think that there's a huge disparity between the moderates and the deluxes. Visit and eat in the deluxes by all means, but sleep in a moderate. They're beautiful, peaceful, really romantic (P.O. Riverside or French Quarter for example) and transportation to the theme parks is just as easy as you find at a deluxe resort.

I think nowadays, going to Disney World is more like taking a cruise. If you pay for it up front instead of putting it on a credit card, you just look forward to the trip and although you may have withdrawls when you get home, at least you don't have the added pain of having to pay it off. We can't afford to go all that often, but it makes our trips all the more special. There's more new stuff to see when we're able to go. I find that the anticipation and yes, the saving for the trip is almost as enjoyable as the trip itself.

It surely does add up.

OK. I admit I've been over indulgent this past year. Well it was the 50th right? (Good as reason as any).

I went Jan 05, May 05, June 05, Oct 05, and Jan 06. Five times . . . *5*0th celebration - get it?

I know. That's lame. But seriously, if you are really going to go then the basic Annual Pass is the only way to do it. While I won't get into the argument about what the AP "entitles" you to and what is a maybe perk - my 35 days within a year's time was over $200 cheaper than two 10 day and one 5 day tickets that didn't have the park hopper option. I figure my cost per day's admission into a park was just under $11.00.

I was able to take advantage of better rates at the various on property hotels all the way from the Pop Century on the value side up to Wilderness Lodge on the deluxe side. Just last month the usual rate for the Caribbean Beach Resort was $149.00 which I originally booked at $110.40/night. I booked it under the "Best Rate" plan and it was further reduced to $88.10/night. I booked two trips under Best Rate and really didn't have any problems with it but having done totally spur-of-the-moment trips I could see how that would not work out. I actually liked not having to stay on my toes so much about the discount codes. They do sell out.

I also took advantage of the Disney Dining Experience card which cut eating costs by 20%. It paid for itself countless times and I didn't have to burn out on burgers and chicken strips.

Gifts and such were purchased at World of Disney in Downtown Disney with the AP discount as well. Tickets to Pleasure Island were 1/2 price. I rode Expedition Everest 10 times during AP preview.

As for the airlines it was hit or miss. I did a higher price one trip at $251/person round trip from Nashville to Orlando but last month it was barely $80 roundtrip (Southwest booked in October). I did travel so much last year I earned a Rapid Rewards round trip from Southwest so that softens the higher price ticket on Delta. Except for the the trip down on 05/04/2005 which was the day before Disney's Magical Express started I used DME to and from the airport. They had a rough start but it works now.

Each trip cost around $2100.00 to $2300.00 depending on length of stay and where we stayed so all added up it was some over $10k. (Don't tell my DW)!

So if you are thinking $5k/trip I think you are shooting high on the pricing.

I though I was taking a big chance on the AP cost and though if I could just make two good trips I'd come out OK but things turned out much better than I planned. It depends on really two factors besides the money. How often can you go job wise and WHEN you can go. If you notice most of my trips are the off or near-off season. If you have the freedom about those two points and can still keep your job then it gets more affordable.

Now lets see . . . when does Flower and Garden start at Epcot this year? :animwink:

*Luckily* I just have to worry about paying for myself, I usually go with friends who help the cost get cut down. We do a couple of things to save on cash like only eating one big meal a day [doing counterservice or snacking the rest.], go during the off season, drive or fly southwest or if you book your flight fairly early your rates aren't horrible, if all else fails, stay at the Hampton Inn right across I-4 from WDW. Its not as great as on property but you are still at WDW.

And like mentioned before, if all else fails call Kingdom Consultant. They will help you out with your travel plans on a budget.

I am truly wondering how you afford to go to Disney World several times a year. We went last summer and it was a trip of a lifetime! We are planning to go back, but not until 2007 because it will cost us a about 5 grand to go just my son and I, by the time all is said and done.

I understand if alot of you are from Florida and can drive, and just go for a weekend getaway- but what about the flyers? Do you have any tips on making it more affordable?

( and by the way I am sooo jealous that you are able to go when you want!)

$5k? Wow, that is huge, do you stay in Concierge?

I have a boa tfor the winter in Hallandale, FL and usually when we fly down from Boston, we will stopover in Orlando for the night. Even then, It is usually only $79 P/P for the airfare to Orlando, $200ish for a AP Rate room at AKL, $39 P/P for airfare from Orlando-Fort Laudy, and then $59 for airfare from Fort Laud-Boston. Even then you are looking at around $550 for one night in Orlando, plus a week in Hallandale.

We also do many of the things that others have posted:
1)Disney Visa Rewards
2)I have a PAP, and usually get a good room discount.(We stay at a Value resort most of the time).
3)Most of the time we drive the 18 hours.
4)I have money directly deposited into a "vacation savings" account.
5)We try to squeeze in 2 trips in one year (with our AP), and then take a year off.

6)The majority of my funds for the trip though, come from my tax refunds, which I use exclusively for my WDW trips.

There are 4 of us in my family, 2 adults, 1 child(7), and an infant(2). We try to stay for at least 10 days, and usually it costs us around $2500.

One year I even worked at the Disney Store as a CM, just to take advantage of the CM discount. That plan worked out great, until The Childrens Place bought them out, and we lost our discounts.

We do a lot of what others have mentioned and a few more things.

We have DVC so that helps with the rooms (that is a whole nother thread if it is for you personally, Woody. :lookaroun )
With DVC you currenlty get $100 off AP. We try to do 2 or 3 trips in the 12 months, then take some time off and get new ones the next year or so.

We have been so many times we no longer feel the need to do it all, or go all out. We still eat at nice places, but 5 or 6 in the 8 days we are there. We sometimes spilt meals. We also get food from the store and save a lot of money that way.

We tend to bring back the same sovinors (esecially for the kids) so we aren't spend tons and new ones. We often put them away where the kids can't use them at home and bring them out for the trip. This goes for hats, spiners, pal mickey, pins, pressed pennies, etc... We do get some new things each trip, but only a few. This keeps are spending down, and we look like t he ultimate tourists!

If you don't rent a car you can save a lot of money. We will now only if we are going to Vero Beach also or got a really good deal. (for us it also depends on what resort you are staying at.)

If you do have a car the Disney outlet store at prime outlets is great. :animwink:

Airfare, we always hunt for good ones, and try not to go during the pricey holiday seasons. Spirit has been good for us, but lately I am interested in the SW dings (right now Detroit to MCO for $40 each way, one stop.) We almost never pay more then $100 per person each way, often much less.

As others said, got to love the Disney Visa rewards. Never carry a blance, but put what we can of daily expenises on it. We have had up to $600 for trips (much more if you add it up over the years, and have never paid fiance chareges on it.)

Four us DDE worked out very well on the last 3 trips (in 12 months) not sure if we will do it again with the price increase. Might try the dining plan now that DVC can do it.

We also save through out the year and would rather spend our $ there then other places so that is what we do. It is a mater of priority. Disney is one for us. How silly is that? (oh we joke that we aren't drinkers or smokers so all the money for that bad habbit goes right to our WDW fund. ) Everyone needs a vice, WDW is ours!

On average at trip for the 4 of us to WDW for 8 days cost around 1,000 to 1,500. We have never stayed at a value resort or off property yet, but would if that was the only way we could go. :animwink:
