Segway recall

I'd be very surprised if it does affect anything at all. They just need to be flashed with new software; it ought to be a really quick bit of preventative maintenance.

They'll probably post pone the Segway tours for however long it takes to get the Segway PT's software upgraded, if in fact the Segway's are the PT model. I thought they'd recently many of the new all-terrain ones right? It doesn't sound like that model's affected. :lookaroun

Unfortunately it is affecting operation. Through Friday (at least), all tours and the Segway experience in Innoventions have been cancelled or closed. Segway will work overtime to install the new software into the Segway's at Disney (both guest and CM Segways) so the venue can reopen.

All 23,500 Segways shipped, all models, were affected with the recall.

Straight from the Cast Portal:

Segway use temporarily suspended due to recall
Date: 09/14/2006

Segway Inc. issued a voluntary recall of all Segway products on Sept. 14. Therefore for the safety of all Guests and Cast Members, all Segway tours and experiences offered at the Walt Disney World Resort, as well as backstage use of the vehicles, will be suspended until Saturday, Sept. 16.

The Segway organization issued the recall after identifying a problem that could cause the units to unexpectedly trip into reverse, but the company successfully has identified a software upgrade that will prevent this malfunction from happening.

Segway is sending a team of service professionals to the Walt Disney World Resort to complete the required upgrade to all Segway vehicles.

I heard the problem this morning on the way to work and immediately my wife and I thought about all the Segways that Disney uses onstage as well as backstage.

I am relieved that the company making these products will be coming onsite to make the necessary software adjustments for Disney World in just under a week.

Everyone is. Disney uses them a lot backstage as well, plus the Segway tours are very popular. Segway is hoping to have the back up and running by Saturday. :)
