Seasonal to FT switch question.

Hello all!

I have my Traditions class on the 31st and I'll be in Merchandising in West Side in DTD and when I met with my recruiter, he mentioned there was no full time openings for Merchandising and going seasonal was a way to get the foot in the door as they hire from within the company.

How hard would it be to do the switch if an opening is available?

Thanks in advance,
Leo

Depends on how you perform in your Seasonal role. If you impress your manager(s), you'll be in good shape. Full time openings will come to the best internal employees first before any positions get posted for outside hires.

Awesome, thanks for the quick answer.

With having owned my own retail store (and closing it due to the economy) I think I'm on top of things.

Just make sure you play into the sugary sweet mentality that's required of "on stage" cast members. I've heard that retail managers at WDW are very hit-or-miss, but I'd strongly suggest playing along in order to get that full time position, even if you have to grit your teeth and glue on a smile.

Gotcha!

My store having been a children's shoe store, one of less than a handful of independently owned ones here in Orlando, I love to deal with kids, and with my wife being a bit on the controlling side, well, it all helps. :D

I have a friend that is a manager in one of the stores and knows the managers in the ones I will be at.

This is not true at all. Internal transfers come from Casting itself, and not the line of business such as merchandise. Your managers have nothing to do with getting a full time position with the company. They contact casting letting them know they have positions available, and then Casting transfers people, or offers them a position elsewhere as long as you have an active transfer on file. I mean it could defintley help basically buttering up the managers, and performing your job well. But in the end, it comes down to Casting.

This particular move wouldn't be a "transfer," it would be a "promotion."

So it would be a transfer or promotion? They said I might have to go casting before my time was up but I gues that was to look for a transfer, not promotion.

Casting is in charge all all promotions for STCU roles, keeping your record card good is the best way to be able to move up, when a full time position comes up, management lets casting know, casting then looks at there transfer request pools, if there is a full timer waiting for that position it goes to them in seniority order, if there is no full timer then they look at part timers in seniority order then if they look at seasonal/ non union areas, before going and offering to the general public. This is the way all STCU postions are filled as per the union contract.

I would recomend putting in a transfer request as soon as your allowed to at casting, but put in for part time and full time, then your in the running for them both, then if the part time comes up first take it and put in for full time again (as the transfer would remove you from the list.) Being part time makes it alot easier to get full time than seasonal, so its usually easier to aim for that first. Hope this helps.

You can look at it as 2 types of transfer.

transfer type one is when you are requesting a simple role change and are allowed after working in current role for 6 months and being with the other transfer guidelines. eg. this would be transfer for say a part time role in from one job classification to another.

The second type of transfer is considered a promotion, you do not have to be in role for 6 months but have to fulfil the other criteria, i.e less than 5 points etc. this would be for say p/t -f/t ot seasonal to p/t.

Thanks for clearing that up. I would like to stay in what I will start but no p/t nor f/t positions were open so I went with the seasonal.

Guess I'll play it by ear (no punn intended)

Well, I put my name on the list for PT/FT two weeks ago or so and already I'm to bump up to PT on the 24th and kept on the list for FT. To boot, was asked before that if I wanted to become a trainer which I said yes.

Been a while since I posted here.

Been kitchen production trained (Candy Cauldron), became a Trainer, and might get Relief Coordinator trained!

Any way to check on the hub what the waiting list is for FT in one specific area or do I have to ask a leader for that?
