Downtown Disney parking is likely to (regardless of this study) shift to the model used in Disneyland.. You are allowed a few hours of 'free' parking.. unless you have a receipt showing a purchase, meal purchase, or other within downtown Disney.. then that will be extended.. for more info, look a thte policies for DLR's DtD parking...

Meanwhile.. this is my understanding of the initial design for the flyover beam that will wrap around and stop at wilderness lodge.... and continue on as stated above..

As support for my claims on this.. Note that soil studies, and reinforcement work has already been performed in 2 location on either side of project area.. With the eastern side being completed about 2 months ago... You may have noticed the booms in the water near the water bridge, as well as the construction wall that was there for a period of time..

Are you thinking single one-way beam, or dual two-way lines?

Disney could always build a single one-way line at first, but build the stations for eventual two-way lineing. This would allow them to build it for a good deal less.

I still think the "master plan" yearrrs down the road could be to push most park parking to DTD (via Disneyland) and make that the backbone of WDW.

Wdw71fan, please provide more details or links to the information you mentioned. Any work done, doesn't matter how little, is very significant and says a lot about the company's long term plans!

To those who are doubtful, put yourself in management shoes. Let's say a study shows that just a very short extension of the system, say linking EPCOT with DHS or to DTD showed a new estimated cost compatible to widening roads and buying new buses, and that other studies show customer satisfaction would be much greater with the monorail extension than conventional solutions, from that point of view, I can see them making a decision to make the capital investment to extend the monorail route a short distance. Keep in mind also, they just extended the track a very very very short distance in order to make maintenance work easier. So, it's not far fetched that they may take another look at what could be done as far as possible extensions.

I have a ROUGH (VERY ROUGH) understanding of what has been casually suggested as the route for a proposed beamway... Again, all conversation and study.. nothing beyond that.. This isn't the first time it has been looked at... Maybe it will be the last?

I'll make another mock up of the route as I understand it... I'll post it soon..

Hooray another one has popped up. Here's something to consider though. Money is cheap. The mouse would have to bond or borrow a significant amount of money in order to do any sort of upgrade or expansion and with rates as low as they are, a large capital expense would make a whole lot of sense right now. Probably at no time in recent history has it been cheaper to borrow money than ever before and given Disney's stable financial status (not counting John Carter) they could and have taken advantage of this. In a way you are already seeing this with the other large capital projects on property and off. (Avatar, Cruise Ships, Cars Land, etc.) Monorail expansion can be also argued as a revenue booster, particularly in terms of lodging rate premiums and additional bookings. It won't offset the cost, but it could in the long-run.

Just something to consider.

People are using those figures from monorail projects like the one in las vegas or the one that is being built in Brasil. no one here has a real clue what the costs are but they wont be that high since disney owns the land they are building on. Its funny to hear 50million a mile and not think that number is grossly inflated.

The one for vegas used land that did not have to be built, the casinos donated the land. The cost is not inflated when compared to the vegas one and also the one in dubai. $50 - $100 million, when including in the cost of the stations and trains is on point for past, current, and future projects. The only projects that have cost less are those that use smaller vehicles, use a single beam instead of dual on top of the support piers, and or are built in countries where the labor costs and construction standards are lower.

I like rumors like this...its fun to imagine...I just don't understand why the monorail would be so grossly expensive? I know things like this are very expensive, but with todays technology they can't figure out a more cost effective way to build this?? Does anyone know what drives the price of this so astronomically high?

It isn't so much the trains, it is the cost of construction of the beams and the support piers.

Are you talking about the site of the Mediterranean Resort?

This would be a nice rumor, and you've got to think, this is definitely a good time for such an investment. Long term this makes sense for the resort.

This screamscape rumor was from 4/5... I'm pretty sure we already had a thread on this that has since died.

Yeah, there was. It was mentioned and linked to in the second or third post here. But this one has some interesting new comments and diagrams from raven...

This is about as reliable as that old urban/CM/fanboi myth about the dark spaces on the Swan and Dolphin being places that were removable so the monorail extention could go through. ... Boy, I loved having to shout that one down about 765,432 times.

You mean I signed the easement paperwork at SSR for no reason?!?! No that paperwork means it is coming!!!!

Maybe we should all just donate our time to help construct the new beams and supports to keep the costs down and that way, we can have all the expansion we can dream of.

I have a Florida General Contractor's license. I can pull the permits and supervise the work. Make sure it's built to code. :D
