I will be heading to Scotland on May 13 and I'm looking for some unusual things to do in and around Edinburgh. I have picked up a few travel guides, but would like to find some cool pubs and hidden treasures. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

Steve.

you should try a battered mars bar:slurp:
And for anyone thinking that's a joke - those things are real!

I can't give you any advice, not being a local, other than make sure you pack waterproof clothing.

hi celticdog!

I have been to Edinburgh plenty of times and there is lots to see espeically if you stray away from the main tourist routes!
It sounds cheesy, but I'd recommend that you do the open top bus tour of the city, you get a commentary which tells you about the city as you pass through it and the best thing is that the bus stops in various places in the city and you can hop on and off all day with your ticket (which also helps with all the hills!!) The tour starts right next to the main train station.
There are lots of ghost walks that you can go on around the city (if you are feeling brave!) they tend to start halfway up the Golden Mile and you pretty much just turn up on the night, but I'd reccommend going to have a look at the boards during the day so you know what time to turn up!
You could also go to Edinburgh zoo and see the daily penguin parade!! It is a short bus ride from the city centre.
If you fancy doing abit of people watching, or just taking time out then the park on Princes Street is great, and if the weather is good it the perfect place for a picnic!
My best advice to you would be to just wander round (it's a very walkable city!) and keep your eyes open, there are plenty of great places to see and things to do that aren't in the guide books!!

have fun!! :sohappy:

Is that one those candy bars that deep fried?
That's exactly what it is - a chocolate candy bar covered in batter and deep fat fried:

You will find that the Mars bars over here are different from the American ones. And I don't mean they have been designed for Scots to deep fat fry them.

You could go and watch Hearts win the Scottish Cup that day?

Just a warning though, if you're still in Edinburgh on Sunday the 14th, and Hearts do win the Scottish Cup, certain parts of Edinburgh are liable to be very busy with celebrating fans. I hope.

And if you're looking for a deep fried Mars Bar, try over in Glasgow instead. You're more likely to find 'the instant heart attack' over on the west coast.
