Scooters

How does one go about renting a scooter at Disney World? I Googled it and saw off-site rentals - is that what most people do? Or do they rent them at the parks? What is the best option?

My mother finally agreed to go on a trip with us and my nephew (her grandson) so he could see the Star Wars stuff. She recently had lung surgery and has some other health issues. Without a doubt, she needs a scooter. (She might even qualify for the DAS pass, but first things first.) I think with the scooter she'd be fine, but we'd definitely take it easy and go when it's cooler outside. Any other tips from those experienced with older people and scooters would be appreciated! Disney is physically demanding and I'd feel awful if something happened.

What resort are you staying at if you don't mind me asking? I think you have made a wise decision with scooter bug. Some resorts are quite spread out and just the walk to the bus stop or food can be quite the hike.
We haven't booked anything yet. If it were just my husband and me, we'd probably stay at The Swan. (That's where we were going to stay for our last trip, but it got cancelled.) Now that my mom and nephew are going we will probably stay at one of the All Star resorts so that it can be more affordable for them. We've never stayed there before so I hope it's decent. It looks nice enough online. We are hoping to go in January and I'm waiting for Disney to add that month to the calendar. Is it my imagination or did they used to go a year out on the calendar??

No, the scooters you would rent are much smaller and compact. The store scooters are more like the ones Disney rents in the parks. Contrary to what Disney rents, they’re really not user friendly. If you go online to either company, I’m sure you’ll see pictures of the ones they have.
Oh I have! They seem pretty nice, but I admit I have never really paid much attention to scooters before. :)

Just a note about DAS: from my understanding, any issues with mobility generally will not qualify for DAS. That issue can be be accommodated by using a wheelchair/scooter in the stand-by queue and a DAS pass won't be issued.

Do all of the Disney World scooters go this slow? I've got one at Disney Springs yesterday and I actually had to turn the dial down to keep from running away from my family. And the battery lasted all day long. I'm at Animal Kingdom right now and it is 153 in the afternoon and I'm having to have them bring me another scooter because this battery is dead. It also wouldn't beat a snail trying to pass 5 ft. This thing is extremely slow! Are they all this slow?

The scooters that you rent in the parks are slow and very clunky…they’re like driving a ‘72 caddy
