Saving for trip

We've thought about taking a Dave Ramsey course. We don't have any debt, but I am curious about it.

His books are also pretty good -- mostly straightforward and stuff you already know, but it always helps to be reminded

My children and I had a huge piggy bank that you could only open by smashing. We decorated it in Disney and put any extra change in it that we had. In about 8 months we had almost $200. For myself, being a single parent going alone with children, I looked at my budget and realized I could be saving a lot more than I was. I used coupons when I could and anything small I could do I would do. It may seem like a small amount of money you're saving at the time, but it adds up so fast.

Another way we saved money for our trip - we are fortunate to have a Disney store close by. Every couple of weeks, I would put 20-$30 on a Disney gift card. Can't spend them anywhere else!!

We saved our change also. One tip that worked for us - once a month, we would roll all the change and put it in a shoebox. Not as tempting to dip into the change jar when it's already rolled. (On another note - make sure you save some change to carry with you - shiny pennies and quarters for the penny pressing machines, and I got into a bind on the first day needing 50 cents in the ladies room - had to get change from a stranger)

Also, made out our housekeeping tip envelopes and had the money already sealed in them by the time we left (didn't have to worry about scrounging up dollar bills every day.)

We have figured out that it costs less if you stay off site, for a few nights. Then we will move on site for the last several days of our tirp. Not only can you find less expensive rooms out of the world, but you usually can get free breakfast also. When you are staying at Disney you can also bring some breakfast foods to your room, pop tarts, mufffins, cereal, you get the idea. Bringing your on snacks into the parks also saves money, a bottle of water that you would pay a quarter for (when buying a case) will save you over $2.00 at the parks. It can be done with planing and saving.

Yet the American savings rate in a negative number... Hmmm... Looks like people need to keep reading!

Anyways, Dave admits it, he "gives the same advice your grandmother would give you only (he) keeps his teeth in." He repeatedly says it's common sense, people just need the push to do it. :animwink:
