San Angel Inn

How is the San Angel Inn in Mexico at Epcot? The last time I went there - the food was DELICIOUS!!! But looking at the menus - it seems that they have eliminated burritos and tacos from the menu (that is stuff I would eat from the dinner menu). The food that they serve at the San Angel Inn cafe outside is the food that I want inside. Also, do they no longer serve Fried Ice Cream?

I just went in Sept during the free dining promotion and it was terrible. Now this is probably because the free dining was going on which I was not part of. But I waited 45 minutes after my reservation time. They seemed understaffed. The last time i went there before this which was a few years earlier I enjoyed the food more. Food was good but not superb.

The San Angel Inn has real traditional Mexican dishes and fried ice cream and burritos are not really traditional Mexican dishes. They are actually Mexican-American or TexMex dishes that started appearing in the US in the early to mid 20th century. The burrito is believed to have originated in the dusty borderlands between Tucson and Los Angeles in around the 1930's.Fried ice cream is believed to be a contemporary ethnic interpretation of Baked Alaska and started appearing around the 1950's or 60's. You will also find a Japanese style fried ice cream appearing around the same time.Quite honestly I am surprised that they still have hard shell tacos.

If you want that type of food that we typically recognize as Mexican food the out door cantina is your best bet.

I have been to Mexico and NO this is not traditional Mexico Food it is worse. Save your money and time and go somewhere else. This has been discussed a million times on this board and others and ...more did NOT like it at all than liked it. I heard the Cantina was a bit better so we will give that a try. Bot NEVER again to San Angel's..Ioho (In our humble opinions)

I will go to the Cantina - the food there was delicious last year. So now I have a new question - what is the BEST World Showcase resturant to eat at that is sit down?

IMHO it would be either Rose and Crown. or Le Cellier. Le Cellier is next to impossible to get into so I typically opt for Rose and Crown. Rose and Crown is also great for viewing illuminations from.

I agree. What part of Texas are you in? Have you been to Fonda San Miguel in Austin? If not, you should go. Now THAT is good traditional Mexican food.

I think the problem with San Angel Inn is that it is next to impossible to mass produce really good authentic mexican food. With the high volume of meals they serve there, it would be very difficult to use the fresh ingredients and the very time consuming techniques that are required for many traditional mexican dishes.

Of course there will be some people who like or even love San Angel Inn. But if you are spoiled by real mexican food, more than likely you will be disapointed. Also, others are disapointed when they go to San Angel Inn expecting Tex-Mex, which is very different from authentic mexican food.

It would be like spending a week in Italy eating at the best restaurants, and then coming home and eating at the Olive Garden. Nothing against the Olive Garden....I enjoy a meal there from time to time....but you get the picture.

Seems to me that they need to be better prepared for the Free Dining with larger staffs. There should be no excuse for bad managment.

We ate there (san angel) in August and we really loved it. We didn't have a reservation but just walked up. I had the chilliquilles (I know it isn't spelled right) and it came with a steak that was seasoned with something spicy and my husband had a steak with enchilladas. He liked his but said mine was better. We had great service. Where I live there is a genuine mexican restaurant that is similar in food to this place so we were pleased. We went looking for a different kind of mexican instead of taco bell kind of stuff.

I like San Angel Inn - notice I said like, not love. Now the Sopa Mexicano, that I do love. The rest of the menu - meh. It is like somone said about the Olive Garden. Will I turn up my nose and not eat in the OG, of course not. But am I going to rave about the food? Not on your life. Same goes for the San Angel Inn.

As for the best sit down in EPCOT, for my money, France.

Why - Le Cellier is waaaay overrated. It used to serve good beef, now it serves shoe leather (oddly enough, they must have the same supplier as the San Angel Inn). Cheese soup is good, but it cannot carry a sub-par menu on its own. And what is the big deal about pretzel bread. It's a pretzel in bread stick form, nothing to write home about.

Germany, I love it. I love the food, I love sitting with people I don't know, and I love the entertainment. However it is a risk. It seems people either love it or hate it. Thats why a tend to not recommend it to people, or at least make sure they have a good idea of what it is going in.

Japan - It is good, but again, these are my tastes. I can't go a 1/4 mile here without running into a habachi place, a korean BBQ, or a a sushi bar. I love it all, but its like eating at home for me.

Morocco - is good, not super great, but good.

Norway - I like it. My grandmother was born in Norway. That should explain my liking for pickled fish. Other people, maybe not :)

Itlay - It was good, I have no idea how it is now.

So that leaves .... France.

I love Mexican food.

That being said, I avoid this place with a passion. Last time I went here I almost puked. My wife got sick as well. Never again.

I find the fast food place outside to be much better, and eat there at least once every trip.

Wish it tasted like it smells.

Last time I went I was intoxicated by the smell of cooking tortillas while I was walking around and riding in the Mexican pavillion. I had to get some!! It was a bad idea haha.. I wasn't impressed at all. It tasted like middle school cafeteria tacos. If you just stick to the nachos with just cheese and salsa and the churros you will be fine, but stay away from the beef. Horrid.
