???'s about the Contemporary Resort's future

For those in the know, I have a question. A friend of mine just returned from a week at WDW, and they did a Wishes cruise July 3rd. Their "captain" told them that the reason one of the wings was closed was because they were turning it into DVC villas. That's the first I've heard of that, anyone else? Last I knew, they were doing a total remodel of all the rooms, closing one wing at a time, then doing the tower floor by floor. Just curious if anyone else had heard this, keeping in mind that this "captain" said she only works twice a week...

According to Ricky on "Inside the Magic" (podcast), what's being done is a remodeling. He hasn't mentioned anything about changing it to DVC villas.

I thinks it a mixture of both, with room refurbishments and some switching to DVC, but I'm not 100% sure. It has been discussed before though, try running a forum search.

From my understanding:

1 wing and the tower will be remodeled, and will remain hotel rooms
1 wing will become DVC
Chef Mickeys will take over the space occupied by the Outer Rim Lounge and Concourse Steakhouse
A new steakhouse and lounge will be built where the food and fun center is

Not sure if the food and fun center will be relocated or not.

Thanks for the quick replies! I told her I'd try to find out for her if it was true or not. If they are turning a wing into DVC, will they have the same layouts as the others? Meaning, 1 and 2 bedroom villas? Doesn't seem like there's enough space to put very many of those.

I guess I'll be using my Vacation Club points to stay at the Contemporary now. . . :D

Now THAT is exciting.

I will miss Concourse Steakhouse, though. Gotta love the atmosphere!

never, ever take anything the transportation people say literally, i can't tell you how many times the transportation CMs have said things like "the monorail is going to be expanded next year" and stuff like that.

Actually, I heard of this rumor before. One of the problems has been people reserving rooms in the wings and then getting there and complaining this isn't what they payed for. Converting it to DVC (and raising the tower rates) would rectify this problem, though I'm not quite sure why they are leaving the other wing deluxe.

Do you mean that one of the wings would be come moderatly priced? no pun intended.

It is still an interior corridor hotel on the monorail

Part of the problem is that they do not have enough convention space for hte amount of rooms that they have.....every convention hotel off property has been adding space over the last few years.

If they take out 1 wing for DVC, they can probably use the other to house convention guests (that ususally do not care about the view) and then the tower can be used for tourists

In 2006, the CR tower rooms will have the room prices increased by $80/night, as posted on a past forum, since they are remodeling the rooms. I wouldn't expect prices to lower, especially after Disney is spending money to renovate the rooms.

I'm glad I'm spending my one night there in 2 months then, and saving $80!

Does anyone know what floors have already been remodelled?

I'm staying in a concierge room for my 10th wedding anniversary, will it be old style or remodelled?

I believe they have started in the South Garden Wing first... That was back in May so I don't know if they would have made it to the Tower yet.

I heard that if you want a view of the Magic Kingdom now from a tower room, it is going to cost even more. There will be a whole new category for that view.

We were at CR july 1-5th on 8th floor of the tower and the 10th Floor Bay View side was curtained off. With guests still on the MK view side. Also, the south wing only part of it was closed of with guests still in the first hallway of rooms closest to the tower.
