Running Watch

I am to the point where I am willing to shell out some good money for a good running watch that will do everything that I want. The problem is I have no idea which ones are good since there are so many to choose from.
I am wanting something with GPS, heart rate monitor, mile pace, maybe even a split clock that would beep or at least show me when to take walk breaks. Anything extra would be great too, of course.
Are there any suggestions? Which ones do you use?

I also have a Garmin 305. At some point I'd love to get a smaller Garmin (the 110 or the 10? Not sure) but other than the size of the 305 I really love it.

Garmin doesn't make this watch anymore but you can find it on Amazon.com. I don't have any experience with the Nike watches.

I was looking at both The Garmin and The Nike sport watch.

In my opinion, you can't go wrong with a Garmin.

If you're a serious runner, or even a casual one I think you've made a great decision to get a new watch, I'm certainly glad I did. I purchased the Nike Plus watch for over a year now and I'm very happy with it. About a month ago I purchased the heart rate monitor to go along with it and it's worked great as well. Here's some pros and cons that I've experienced:

Pros
- Basic and easy to use
- Can use with heart rate monitor
- GPS works well
- While running it provides you with a lot of information at the touch of a button - distance, calories burned, elapsed time, heart rate, pace, etc.
- Nike website - when you load your runs it will take you to a specific site which is fantastic. You can rate your run, label the type of surface you ran on (trail, road, etc.), describe the weather, and mark which shoes you used for the run - which I like because I can keep track of how many miles I'm putting on my shoes. It also shows you an overhead map of where you ran and you can click on different images - satellite and heat map - which is pretty cool.
- Colors - Nike now offers this watch in several colors
- Shoe pod - you can use the small Nike pod that comes with the watch if you're going to run indoors and it will track your run. You don't have to have a Nike+ shoe either, I purchased a little velcro holder for $5 and I just wrap it around one of the laces.

Cons
- The GPS can take a little while before it's ready in cloudy/overcast conditions. Not a terrible problem but I'm sure it's probably the same with all other GPS watches
- I would say that every 5 out of 10 times I hook up the watch to my computer I have to reload the software. A buddy of mine has the same problem with his Nike watch. It's not a huge problem, it only takes a minute or two, but gets a little annoying sometimes.
- it does not have the capability to "beep" for the run/walk or Galloway method of running . . . that I know of anyway
- the heart rate monitor is about $60 to $70 extra and is not included with the watch. Not a huge issue just thought I would mention that in case you're thinking that it's included with it. If you do buy the Nike watch and want to purchase the heart rate monitor make sure you get the Polar one that has a small red box that says "Works With Nike +" symbol on it. Any other one will not work with the Nike+ watch. Trust me on that one.

Overall it's been a pretty good watch, I'm glad I purchased it. I've heard nothing but good things about the Garmin watches as well, I'm sure they have their pluses and minuses too. I don't have any personal experiences with them to steer you in that direction. Good luck with your decision, you'll be fine either way.

Nike sport watch is...crap.

If you can find a 305 on Amazon, get it.
The 310xt has more features, but I don't like it.
The 910 is okay.
I love the Suunto Ambit, but for your purposes, it would be like driving a Ferarri in downtown NYC.

I have the Garmin 405 and overall I really like it. It has a touch bezel around the face of the watch that alot of people don't like, but I don't have a problem with it. This toggles between the virtual trainer mode and regular mode but can be locked if you don't want to accidently change it. It can be hard to work if it gets wet or sweaty and I think that is why alot of people don't like it. The 305 is a bit bigger than the 405 and that is why I originally went with that model. I really like the Garmin website that keeps track of our workouts too. It is super easy to upload your workouts from your watch to the computer. With the 405 (not sure about other models) it connects wirelessly to the computer and automatically updates as long as you have your adapter plugged into the USB port.

My overall concern now with the 305 is the size. That is the only thing keeping me from biting the bullet. But the fact that the 405 can be hard to work when it gets sweaty or wet is a problem with me because I sweat like a man, no seriously. I have ruined 2 pairs of apple headphones because I haven't switched to waterproof yet.
I definitely need to make my mind up tho.

Check out the 305 on amazon, they have some very convincing pictures of ladies with tiny wrists wearing it (which just might be the selling point for me).

That sounds like a nice feature...with the 305 you have to use the included USB cord.

The size is definitely an issue...all I can really say is that you get used to it. The good thing about the size is that you can easily read the screen at all times. I have mine set up to display the time of day, my current pace, distance and total time all on one screen and I can read them all just fine. That's a capability you may not get with a smaller watch.

Wow there are some great deals for the 305 on eBay. I was very pleased with the refurb prices.

Are any of these things waterproof/resistant? I do run in the rain so I need something that will keep up with me.

I want to say that I read that it is waterproof up to a certain depth and that you can even swim in it but I will have to do my research again to see if I am remembering correctly.

Well I just did some quick research and it is saying that it is not waterproof, but that running in the rain with it hasn't affected it with many different reviews. Maybe some others can give you their experience with it.

In further researching for you, I noticed that one of the cons listed in an article that I read was that it isn't compatible with mac OS which may be a problem with me since all we have are apple computers. Maybe someone else can clarify this for me as well.

Hmm...my 305 works fine on our iMac. o_O

I bought the Garmin 110 a little over a month ago and really, really like it. It was super easy to set up & is even easier to download run information from the watch to garmin connect. It beeps at every mile, displays mileage, time ran and current pace. When I upload to garmin connect I can see splits that list my pace for each mile, the number of calories burned for each mile then of course average pace and total calories burned. I also like that you can track you run and see where your pace changed exactly on the course you ran! I think it helps me train better and motivates me to be faster while I am running. My only regret? Not having bought it sooner!
