RSR in need of a refurb?

Radiator Springs Racers is now one years old, and as a birthday gift a refurb looks like it would be a great gift. From this article on Theme Park Insider:
No tipping tractors. No Frank. No Mater sailing over the moon. No dialogue in the Radiator Springs town scene. No conversation between Lightning McQueen and Sally. Basically, between Mater and the track split between the Luigi's tires and Ramone's paint shop options, there's no audio at all in the heart of the ride, save for snoring cars and light background music.

Does anyone know if those effects have been fixed and it was just a one time thing? hopefully this ride can get the love it needs soon. Its working effects are still amazing, but with all of the effects working it makes this ride much better.

Two weeks ago, I rode three times. Effects out on all three rides were tractors and Doc Hudson swinging back and forth. The whitewall effect failed once, the paint shop effects were mistimed. The others on this list were all working. The timing on all of those effects has to perfect for everything to work. So it's not surprising that there are failures, but I was surprised that things were down all day. On the bright side, the ride ran all day, which was a huge improvement from my last trip, when it only ran about 60% of the time.

You really gotta wonder sometimes about the current crop of Imagineers or whoever works on Disney rides these days. Broken yeti, RSR down or malfunctioning, Madame Wardrobe with a tea cozy covering her head...jeez...

Editor’s Note:
  • June 20, 2013: High Octane: The big animatronics at Radiator Springs Racers have been having maintenance problems. The good news is that all the fixes have been arriving in the past week, and will continue through June. After re-engineering the massive talking cars, WDI has programmed the newly redesigned animatronics and the Pixar team came down to Anaheim to give them their blessing. Doc Hudson and Lizzie are now working again, the tipping tractors and Luigi will be replaced and reprogrammed next week, and the fog effect is back on the race track. John Lassetter and his Pixar quality control team kept TDA's feet to the fire on this complicated ride, just in time for summer.

Definitely not september I hope. It seems rather a waste of money to refurb only after a year. Look how many other rides go without refurbish for quite a while!!!

The only thing I noticed not working was that the tractors weren't tipping. They weren't tipping the entire time I was there. A short refurb in the slow season wouldn't hurt, but it went down when I was there in June, and geez.

It may not be that things are broken, per se. I know on Kilimanjaro Safaris at DAK, the shaky bridge needs time to reset if a Wild Africa Trek vehicle or an animal trips its safety system, so many people don't experience it on the normal safari and assume it's broken. Maybe some sensor got tripped because the animatronic moved .001" more than it was supposed to and the system is running a diagnostic on it or a technician has to come OK that effect to work again. The ride is still pretty new and complicated, so it could be more growing pains.

Judging from my ride on Racers early this morning, just after park opening, that's exactly what is happening. Every effect was working perfectly this morning, except for the two big tipping tractors. Their eyes moved and they did their little animation, but they didn't tip over.

The tipping tractors were each removed from the ride this past April-June, one at a time. They are both now back (or new versions of the originals?), but obviously they are not fully functional. Al Lutz in one of his recent columns said that these big car animatronics have proven to be difficult, but Lassetter wants them fixed so WDI redesigned them in early '13 and have been replacing them one at a time. Once they are replaced, Lutz says WDI has to reprogram them and then the Pixar team has to buy off on them.

This is a big, huge ride unlike any other. But as of July 7th 2013 the only things not working were the two new tipping tractors. Everything else on the ride looked fantastic.
