IIRC Roy wasn’t ready for opening day. They wanted to name one of the other 3 after him, but Roy wouldn’t let them. Then he passed away and in his honor they named #4 after him when it was completed.

The Roy O. Disney has departed WDW for its overhaul/rebuild, which will take place at the Strasburg Railroad in Strasburg, PA. Roy is the last of the four locomotives to be overhauled and will receive the same modifications that the Walter E. Disney, Lilly Belle and Roger E. Broggie received...

Yeah, there’s a few stories like that. The story I’ve always heard is Walter and Roger were going to be the Walter and Roy (they are sister engines) but Roy didn’t like that, so that certainly goofed up the names.
It could be they were going to have the 4-4-0 be the Broggie, and they just swapped them. Since Broggie built the Lilly Belle (4-4-0) that would have been a nod to him.
Kinda fun to think about it all!

There really just needs to be a “steam train geeks” page. Only a few of us care about Strasburg, Feedwater heaters, etc. haha.

I want to clear out the misconception about Roy's dynamo replacement. It was actually replaced with batteries at probably around 2018, because I can tell you that Roy's dynamo housing was still emitting steam during 2017:

FTFY. Refurb is a multi-year process. Nothing going to be happening this spring...
I think yours should be official lol. No offense to everyone else, but since Walter and Roger's overhaul forums had pretty much the same title format, Roy should be like that too.
All the other locomotives came back with their original names, so this one should come back with the original name too. Even if this didn't, Roy still has a locomotive named after him at Hong Kong Disneyland (even though HK's trains are not actual steamers).
Makes me wonder what even was the original naming plan if the Walter and Roger were both named after the Disney brothers.

I’ve wondered that as well. Both make sense.
The Lilly Belle as the 4-4-0 makes the most sense to me, but since Roger Broggie built it, having the Roger be the 4-4-0 would also be a clever nod to him.
