He's asking if at the very least the four theme parks at walt disney world are made to withstand winds from a catagory 5 hurricane because various scientists have said this will be another active hurricane season.

Yes most of the buildings are made to withstand hurricane force winds, I'm not sure about a catagory 5, but regaurdless precautions are always made for guests, CM, and the buildings' safety.

Many of the RCID building codes require 200+ mph capabilities. However, that doesn't mean all buildings on property are with that requirement.

Also, by the time a strong storm reaches the central part of the state they will not be at Category 5 levels.

If I had to guess I would say no.

Designing to withstand a category 5 is mathematically possible but it is not economically or esthetically practical. It is my understanding that everything in WDW was designed to exceed current code at the time of design. As to what degree it it exceeds the code I have no idea.

Buildings that fit the category of "essential" structures which would be things like hospitals, fire stations, schools etc are required by code to meet a stricter standard but nothing on the order of a 200 mph wind load. The highest wind speed on the code books for Florida is either 140 or 150 mph and that is in the Florida Keys. If they did design to 200 mph they would of had to custom design and test an entirely new type of window and door. I can't think of a single manufacturer that makes a 200 mph window. Even many of the steel roll up shutters are only rated to 150 mph.

I would not worry to much about WDW in a hurricane. If a Category 5 did head toward WDW it would loose quite a bit of strength before it reached WDW and buildings in WDW are some of the best built in the state of Florida.

one ? are the theam parks made well to take the winds of a cat 5 hurricane?
More better ?: there's a shoe floating down the street on a raft, how many pancakes does it take to cover the dog?

None, because ice cream doesn't have bones!!!

thats not quite true. it would depend on tthe path, the lenght of time it spent over land before it hit wdw. a strong cat 5, it came straight across, not diagonaly, could still be a cat 5 when it reaches the parks.

It would have to be moving very fast. While possible it is highly unlikely.

True, which is why many buildings may not withstand them. In fact, much of Orlando would likely be significantly damaged by a strong cat 5 that made it to the city. However, much if not all of it could be rebuilt (at a cost). Unfortunately, with a cat 5 coming across that far, WDW may be the least of the concerns (despite our love for the place).

peas n chips n gravy can all be thrown at the tree of life in a cat 5 storm and cause no damage. However there may be further wind problems as a result of the peas
