Room Upgrades

I have seen a family upgraded, just because they were rude, obnoxious and acting like trash. I don't know what room they originally purchased, but at POR, they were upgraded to the Royal Suite.

Last year, while checking in, The lady in line next to us was yelling about how their room wasn't ready. It was 9:30AM and of course the lady was told check-in isn't until 4PM. She kept yelling, telling them how her family is super tired. She then pointed to her family and her husband and two sons, were laying on the floor sleeping in front of the TV, while kids were trying to watch cartoons.

After she finally left the line, the manager comes up and tells the cast member to put them in any room available ASAP. The manager woke up the family, they came to the front of the line, and the Cast Member says "Congratulations, you have been upgraded to our Royal Suite". I was furious. Because moments before this, my request to have adjoining rooms with my brother and his family were denied. We couldn't even be in the same building. I went to the manager and said, I cant have adjoining rooms or be in the same building with my family, but people like that can get upgraded to the best room in the resort. Of course he had no response.

What happened to you was very unfortunate. To make you feel a *little* better about the rude family's upgrade, there is no singular "Royal Suite" at POR. There are "Royal Rooms" which are the exact same size as all the other rooms; the difference is in the decor. Royal rooms are princess-themed with elaborate detailing. The coolest feature is LED fireworks in the headboards. They do cost a few dollars more per night than other rooms, just as river view rooms cost more than garden view rooms.

Rude people make situations very challenging for cast members. And nice people like you suffer for it. :(

Just asked my wife again to make sure, no suite, your right, they were upgraded to the Royal Guest Room.

oh My, @Disneyfamily4 what an horrible story. I understand that after that you were furious. I would have been too.

I can't understand that people can be so rude.

The manager just wanted them out of the lobby. For the new people coming in, he did not want their first glimpse of the resort, to be of a scummy family sleeping on the floor. As if telling them to wake up and to act like civilized humans would be "undisney like", so they get them a better room instead.

Were leaving again for POR in a week. Maybe I should pack a Pillow lol.

Don't get me wrong though, we have had some great experiences in Disney, which is why we go every year.

The funniest thing that happened was a few years ago. We just got done putting sun screen on my daughter, so we then turned to put some on my son. When we turned back to my Daughter, she was eating a big box of popcorn. As I nearly started to freak out, being I had no idea where she got the popcorn, A cast member working the pop corn stand came to me and said that she overheard my daughter saying that the pop corn smelled yummy as we passed the stand. So she followed us to give her a box.

It sounds great, and I sure wouldn't turn one down, but just going to Disney is an "upgrade" to us. My husband and I are both in the medical field, so we are unfortunately, always aware of how bad life can be. WDW is our escape, regardless of the room, the meal, the ride, or the show, we appreciate the time we are lucky enough to check out of the "real" world! We are T-minus 25 days today!

We all have seen the stories either here or on Facebook where the family was offered a MK view room in the tower at the Contemporary when they had "paid" for a Garden wing room. I have read countless stories of this happening at other resorts across the WDW property. Have any of you ever received an upgrade and if so did you ask at check in? or was it just offered?
At many Hotels where we stay we pay for the highest room so it is not a problem but one bad thing about upgrades is that if like me you are picky about how clean the room is and the view ,then the upgrade they may give you may a worse room in terms of how clean it but then the view might be better. So you kind of gamble to see if you can get a up grade that in the long run whould be better then the room that you paid for:

We got upgraded twice. On our first trip we were upgraded from a parking lot view in the CR Garden Wing to the Bay Lake view on the 2nd floor.

The second time was bout 5 or 6 years ago. Our reservation at the CR was for 2 rooms for 6 days in a Bay Lake view room. When we checked into our room, we discovered parts of the pool area were under heavy construction and since parts of the pool were still open, loud music was blaring all day as it was at the tail end of Spring Break season. I went downstairs and asked if there were any MK view rooms available and said I was willing to pay the difference to move both our rooms. I was told there were no other rooms available. So, I then asked if there were any rooms at either the Polynesian or GF for all or even several days of our stay for which again I would pay the difference. The desk clerk went to check and returned with one of the Asst. Managers who upgraded us to two Concierge Level rooms with the MK view at no additional cost to us. As the clerk was making our new room keys I asked her why we received such a generous upgrade. She said once I asked about moving to another resort, they would have done whatever they could to keep us in the CR because it looks bad on the management when a guest is unhappy enough to change hotels. I have no idea if that is true or not.
And yes, I wrote very nice thank you letters to Customer Service when we returned home afterwards.

Usually, we are lucky to achieve upgrades, and not for asking for them. We rarely pay for Lake Views at Yacht abd BoardWalk, but almost always get a Lake View. We have been upgraded to Club Level without asking at Yacht, Beach, BoardWalk 4x, and Polynesian.

The best, most insane, magical upgrade was when we were given the Commodore Suite at Yacht Club. Master bedroom with full ginormous private bath, separate normal style bedroom and bathroom, and a foyer, living room, and kitchenette. Three balconies. It was a great room.

DH and I stayed at Beach Club for our anniversary. We were upgraded to a club level one bedroom room suite. We didn't ask for it, just a lucky trip for us. I do think it had a lot to do with the fact that we were travelling without kids, but I can't be 100% sure.

Being a party of 2 will often get you upgraded to a king bed room as they max out at a capacity of 2. It is much better for the resort to have extra rooms that can handle a party of 4 vs ones that can only handle 2.

The wife and I are batting around 800 for getting upgraded from a standard to a king room at PORS when it was just the 2 of us.

Here is a story for you all - we booked a trip to WDW about 5 years ago - and while on the phone with Disney Travel - we were debating which resort we would like to stay in? The Disney Travel agent sensed we were torn between Beach / Yacht Club and Floridian - our kids at the time were 12 and 14 . The agent suggested that we stay at both - by splitting the stay we can enjoy both resorts - 2 days at one and 2 days at another. I would have never have thought of this concept - the agent told us many folks do this?

So we did it - when we arrived at WDW Yacht club - the room was delayed in being ready. We know of the late check in - it was not a problem with us - we had already started to enjoy ourselves. Interestingly when we returned to the front desk area at 4 pm - the room was still not ready. My personality is one where no one is perfect and mistakes are going to happen - we could tell they were a little confused with dealing and the information they had - like why? and what happened.

Then - some other person standing in the background behind check in stepped forward - said to the person trying to help us if he could help? within 5 minutes we were being escorted to a HUGE two bedroom suite on a club level floor? We were like you must be kidding us? and there must be a mistake? The person said "not a problem" and that he could see we were decent folks - and that room was not being used..... WHAT a vacation!

In two days we went to the Floridian - got the room early (same as booked not upgraded). After we got back home I felt compelled to write a letter thanking them. I don't know if that helped anyone but it was appreciated. We have gone a couple of times and we always seem to have a great time. We are not looking for anything extra or free - just want to be taking care of. They seem to do it all the time.

One other thing to note - Disney takes care of everything when you switch resorts - all you have to do is pack. They come to the room and get your bags - then later that day all you have to do is show up at the new resort. Check in is even streamlined - all you need to do is get new room cards? which i think now will be activate your rist bands.....OMG

Once we got upgraded, without requesting/asking at the front desk when we went to check in, to the concierge section at the Polynesian. To be honest it wasn't anything special in terms of the actual rooms but it was nice having easy access to food in their little buffet set up, with a nice seating area and view (which I guess has to be modified now since the bungalows are hanging out right in front of the view now), and seeing some guy at like 9 in the morning come down in his robe and fill all his pockets and carry a strangely high amount of beer back to his room for morning drinking was quite the sight.

was once booked at all star movies and when we went to check in very late at night our room was not available they thought we weren't coming so they gave our room away. So they upgraded us are you ready to the yacht club it was beautiful. Also we have been upgraded from a studio to a 1 bedroom at old key west

Stayed at POR last summer. Paid for a standard room, a special that was announced after booking upgraded us to a Garden View and added Memory Maker, for free! Then, we put in a very far-fetched room request for a King bed. POR was not able to grant us a King bed, but did give us a Royal Room!
It was magical
