room upgrade and free dining

I'm staying at Port Orleans Riverside Sept 3-7 in a standard room with the free dining. I tried to upgrade our room to a royal room and was told all the royal rooms with our promotion had already been booked. There are currently royal rooms available to be booked but from what I understand only a certain number of rooms are allotted for free dining. I was wondering if there are royal rooms available when we check in, will they allow me to pay and upgrade then? (or will they still tell me all the royal rooms for free dining are full?)

They may, but don't count on it. Free dining is basically a sale on rooms that they want filled. Just like buying a pair of shorts on sale, but then deciding you want the full price jeans instead, they will usually only give you credit for what you paid, not the sticker price.

I would think that if there are royal rooms available, they'd let you pay to upgrade when you check in -- no sense turning down money and having the room go empty at that point! It never hurts to ask.

Yes...ask...ask for everything. It doesn't hurt and who knows, you might get lucky! :)

All you can do is ask but I wouldn't get too hopeful. I can confirm this - that there are only a certain number for the promotion. When we booked in March, for free dining, we origionally had a pirate room at CBR. But I don't love the theme of that resort so I wanted to switch to a Royal Room. Only there were not any left. So I switched to POR. Then I stalked - literally stalked the online system to see when a Royal Room came open and after much pixie dust and prayers, I got it and switched to the Royal Room. So now we have free dining with the Royal Room. But we did this all within the window of the free dining promotion. You will almost certainly have to pay for the upgrade though.
