Just saw the new led headlight on lilly belle tonight. Looks really really really bad in my opinion.

Also... What are the new metal boxes underneath the cabs? They are a total eyesore as well.

I have been wanting to do the Magic Behind Our Steam Trains Tour for years. I've heard nothing but great things about it. Really hope that I can do it on our next trip.
It is absolutely worth the time and money!!! It's awesome seeing these beauties in the yard.

I haven't seen the new headlamps at night yet, but I don't think that I will like them. As for the boxes, I read something on this thread or another that said what they were.

Well I think if it improves visibility from the cab for the engineer then it's a good change. I'm all for safety.

Is that a joke? or serious? (That's a serious question by the way... Old Internet sarcasm is hard to read).

This has nothing to do with safety... I don't mind LED lamps... But it needs to be done correctly. Warmer color, and with a frost / diffuser so you can't see the individual led bulbs when the train approaches.

Side note... I am both an avid steam fan, and a professional lighting designer (concerts, theatre, and events) so obviously this is going to get my attention more than other people.

With Hue lights being able to do literally thousands of colors, I cannot believe they can't find a yellow/white led combination.

Blegh. Sorry to get passionately nit-picky but this is amateur hour nonsense. Absolutely no reason why cool white LEDs should be in that headlamp.

Bingo.

I did the steam trains tour a few years ago, and the engineer told us the locomotives go to some place in Georgia when they need service beyond what the WDW shops can provide. When did they start using Strasburg? Or was that just due to the (IIRC) frame issues that Lily Belle had?

Before Strasburg the locomotives went to Tweetsie Railroad in Blowing Rock North Carolina.

Not sure on the whys, but Strasburg is famous for their restoration work.

That's it! NC.

Yeah, I'm about an hour from Strasburg. They built all the Thomas engines there, and have restored trains for a number of other (including their own) railroads. I just didn't realize they were set up to do narrow gauge work as well.

I'll have to stick my head in the shop next time and see if any familiar locomotives are there. The guys are usually more than happy to jaw at you if you show some interest.

It looks very modern. I wish they could do the color of the popcorn lights on MsUSA
Yes, that looks like the cool white end of the spectrum rather than the warm white. It looks very unnatural for a locomotive headlight.
I am very disappointed that as much as they pay attention to detail in other areas that they would do something this stupid.
George is probably spinning in his grave.
Next thing we know they will be filling the tender with batteries and putting electric motors on the locomotives.

I know they use recycled vegetable oil for all their lubrication, but the WDW trains are still running fuel oil, right? And the DL locomotives are running biodiesel, right?

Or is that modification under the cabs on those two pictures WDW switching over as well?

I believe the WDWRR has been burning biodiesel over the years (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

I've seen LED lights on newer Siemens equipment, mostly their locomotives. '
Examples:

ACS-64 Sprinter

Siemens Charger

So to sum it all up, the Roger E Broggie isn't the only one to have LED headlights....
