Robfasto's Picture of the Week - Epcot entrance pre Leave-A-Legacy - 1983

Original Poster
Picture Date: September 1983

Picture Location: Future World - EPCOT Center

Subject: This picture is liable to make a few people mad, me being on of them. It is a great view of Spaceship Earth and the EPCOT Center entrance area well before the Leave-A-Legacy change. Sure there was a lot of waste space but the view was just great.

It's not so much as the trees and grass being grand. It's more a matter of which do you prefer, trees and grass or a concrete structure that "for a small fee" you can add your photo to?

The guy who designed legacy also designed the ball and it's been published that the legacy monument is the type of thing he wanted plunked down infront of it instead of trees and grass to offset and accent the shape - so why must we complain?

Its his ball, they did what he wanted, so why oh why must we pretend we know more about art than the artist?

If that's what he wanted that's fine. I personally do not like it. I don't know more about the art than the artist, but I can have a personal opinion about the art. It's the same thing as liking or not liking a movie or song. I do not like Leave A Legacy and I definately prefer the way the plaza looked in the picture above.

I'll lay a pound of cherries to a bucket of ferrets that said architect did not want that sodding hand sticking out the side of Spaceship Earth!

I too hate the cemetery look. The open green expanse was far more pleasing to the eye.

Becasue it`s the ultimate discredit for an artists target - we, the guests - to hate his `art` so passionately.

The Golden Days of EPCOT Center. . . :o

I remember them too, Horizons1. I wish I could experience them again. :(

Thanks for that picture, Rob! It brought back oh so many memories.
