River Country is Not opening in 2002

More of the same

It seems like Disney is slowly closing off all of the quieter, or calmer getaways on property and only concentrating on the big, loud crowd-pleasers.

Discovery Island
Disney Institute bungalows
Carousel of Progress
etc., etc., etc.

And now, River Country, the original theme water park, and the calmest, most relaxing.

I know each has its reasons, but I just think it is unfortunate. I love the showy fun at WDW, but I especially like the quieter moments, especially in areas where you can reflect or where complete families can enjoy things together. It think that mixture was what Walt intended (and what helps sustain people) in the Vacation Kingdom.

Sigh

This year River Country will not open, but in 2003 it will. They are going to do some cleaning and with less people coming (or so they say) it doesn't pay to open.

From what i've heard it will NOT reopen in 2003.

You did not here this from a Disney CM though. The fate of RC has not yet been decided. But believe me it will very likely be around in 2003.

I don't think they will crap the whole park to re-theme it but I know they are trying to figure out a new water system since the previous used filtered water from the laggon. That is forbidden now so they have to come up with something else. It takes time.

Exactly they expect 2002 to be slower, which will give them the oppurtunity to do some work to the park, that can not be done in the regular off season.

I don't know for certain what they plan to do to RC, but common sence leads one to believe they would need some draw for that side of the world. I don't agree it needs an extensive rehab, but I'll stay open to what the imagineers have in mind a little more theming would not be so terrible.

I think they will definitely need to redo the water system - I have not been to one of the water parks @ WDW yet. Everytime I have tried to go to Blizzard Beach or Typhoon, it seems that they are crawling with people. I would have tried RC but I always remembered that it used lagoon water which just sounded nasty to me. I wouldn't be surprised if there were others that felt the same way. I mean, I'm sure they could keep it open, attendance wise, if the water quality was equal to that of the other parks.

Also, it doesn't have a larger slide like BB or TL, does it? I try to learn and remember as much as I can from reading, but not ever having been there I have no frame of reference.

The theme behind River Country is an old swimming hole. That't why there isn't big slides and it used the lake water. Can't imagine that they would take away from the feel of the place, just seeing what can be done to improve the safety of the water for the guests before they re-open.

With all due respect, the water park has been closed six months and they have done nothing so I find it incredibly unlikely that they will do something with it. The longer it sits, the less the likelihood becomes. Remember--20,000 Leagues has still yet to be officially closed--but do you think disney is waiting for the "right momemt" to open this attraction back up? I think with the big-budgeted attractions currently in the works, the odds of disney doing anything with River Country are slim...and disney has left every signal that this is no longer a water park (you will never hear them refer to "Disney's Three Water Parks" anymore--it's either "Disney's Water Parks" or "Disney's Two Water Parks").

The need to take out mentioning RC on the monorail from the TTC to the Magic Kingdom. I was on the monrail yesterday and when you go by RC the mention it as the old fashion swimming hole.

The recordings take forever to update... Once again- River Country = Closed. I would be VERY supprised if it ever opens as a pay water park again. They might rip up the slides and let ft wilderness guests use it but even that is rather unlikly.

One of the most persistant rumors was that it would become the main pool at FW and be on the list of pools that DVC members could pool hop to, hopefully easing some of the congestion at Stormalong Bay. It could happen, but I'm not holding my breath...

I wish they would turn it into Fort Wilderness's Swimming area. That would be so cool. Even though it is unlikely, It's something to hope for. Fort Wilderness may have 2 pools already but they don't have any with slides I don't think and Fort Wilderness is so big they should turn River Country into an additional swiming area for Fort Wilderness guests. I really don't think it will ever open back up as a water park. I mean look at Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach. River country just doesn't compare to these two. And I'm not saying I don't like River Country, It's just that, through the eyes of Disney it's just not worth keeping it up and running any more. They probably just make alot more with Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach and now the people who would normally go to RC will now go to BB or TL, Which would make them even more money. Well that's kind of what I think.
