He was once asked if he hated those who had imprisoned him, and responded (I'm paraphrasing, as I don't remember the exact quote) that of course he had hated them - until he realized that even though he was freed from prison, his hating them kept him their prisoner in his heart and soul, so finally was able to let the hate go and be truly free.
