*Right Click* Save Picture As...

Okay, I reformatted my hard drive and installed XP. Now though, whenever I try the *Right Click* save picture as technique with pictures online, I can't open them later. I can save them as .ART or .BMP, but whenever I try to open them later, it tells me it's an invalid file.

Help, someone. It's massively annoying.

.ART is an AOL image format and .BMP is a native windows format. You should still be able to open the BMP files. In any event, usually when IE starts saving images as BMP rather than their native format it is because your "Temporary Internet" folder is too small or too full. Try emptying it out and/or increasing the size, reboot, and see if that solves your problem...

Just because he's saving images from the internet doesn't mean he's stealing images...

Did you take those pics of the hockey players in your avatar? (Hmm... well, seeing as to how your a professional photographer, maybe...) But there are a lot of sites that allow you to use their images...

Also, a lot of sites have wallpapers and things, where you are required to do that...

So, unless you happen to know that he's going to sites and stealing images to republish them as his own, it seems better to help than to criticize...

Thanks Greg...

The main reason I want access to the pictures is to utilize them in the contest on the boards. If someone has a problem with people 'stealing' pictures, then they shouldn't post them in a public domain (ie the Internet).

Anyway, I looked at the problem again, and he is a more accurate description. When I try to open up the file after saving it (as a .BMP), it tells me it's an invalid JPEG file. That might give a better idea of what my system is doing.

Again, any help would be appreciated.

*try* this: I don't know if it'll work... but it's worth giving a shot...

When you go to save the file, when you can choose what name to save it as, put "name.jpg" Don't worry about the ".BMP" file type deignation just below it... Then try to open up the image

I don't know if it'll work, but you can try...

Oh yes... another thing... if you can access the webpage from which you want to take the picture from, and you can actually see the image (which you can)... The image will probably be automatically saved in Temp. Internet Files... So.. open up the folder using (in IE) Tools > Internet Options > General > Temporary Internet files > Settings > View Files... :) It'll take a bit of detective work, but you can sooner or later locate the file, click "Copy" and then paste it into any folder in Windows like "My Pictures" :)

What works often is just right clicking and copying it... rather than just saving it...

Then, you should be able to use it wherever...

(Oh... and one more thing... I wasn't saying its right to steal images... If you put it on the internet, it doesn't make it free for anyone... If your going to use it, its best to credit the site when you post your image... I usually use official Disney images in mine, but if your going to take an image from a non official site, its best to credit it... :) Just a tip)

Actually unless you actually ask for permission, Youre stealing it even if you credit it. Im well versed in photo copyright law, and unless youve actually gotten permission to dispaly the images, youre in copyright violation - unless its in the public domain, then you can.

Hey...

I already knew you would know whats illegal or not... When it comes to legal matters with photos, you seem to know more about it than most lawyers...

BUT... he didn't ask that... All Legacy wanted to know was how... And I was just saying that you didn't have to make a rude comment... I just wanted to try to point out that there are a lot of reasons why people would want to save images that don't involve anything illegal...

I didn't mean to offend you or anything... Just, its not like he was asking how to download illegal music off the internet, or where to find bootleg movies....

Im not offended, im just having trouble with the constant consolidation in my profession and the continued problems with photo rights and contracts from AP, Corbis, Retuers, NYT, et al..... Hense why i might be at Disney for most of my future career....

I don't blame you... with the internet (and even before then), people have no respect for others property... I must admit I even find myself borrowing images...

Also, as a webmster, I know what its like to have people steal your images... SaveDisney.com stole one of my images (and I can prove it), yet denied it when I e-mailed them, and claimed it was theirs...

Anyways... "Hense why i might be at Disney for most of my future career...." - Do you work for Disney?

I have a recent problem that sometimes surfaces when trying to save JPEGs - I am only given the option to save them as bitmaps. A reboot will sort this out, but it is a little annoying. (Almost as annoying as Telewest Broadband not working)

I’ve Got Windows XP and Internet Explorer 6, both fully patched. I have no idea why I lose the ability to save JPEGS, it’s raised it’s head in the last week or so. Anyone else have any ideas?
