Riding a ride that broke down?

I have always wanted to ask this question because it has never happened to me before, but I know it has definitely occurred before in the parks. The question is has anyone ever been on a ride where the ride has broken down and you had to walk out of the ride through the emergence exit?

I have been on rides where they have stopped like the Haunted Mansion or Spaceship Earth many times only for it to start back up again in a short period of time, but never have I ever had to be removed from a ride and walked out through the emergency exit. I was just wondering what the experience was like if any of you have ever experienced it.

Frozen ever after naturally after the Frozen desert party. What was bad was one of the guests ahead of us evacuating the boat had a bad knee so she had difficulty trying to get out of the boat.

Big Thunder Mountain at Disneyland. The train stopped on top of the second hill. We existed via a walkway that runs along the track, then walked through a utility tunnel before leaving the ride altogether. There wasn't anything particularly interesting about the experience. It was about as exciting as leaving a mall through a back entrance.

The one I’d love to be evacuated from would be Everest right at the top right as you ascend to the top of the first hill. They probably have some really simple back exit to get down the mountain from, but who knows.

BTMRR at MK (WDW). It was crappy being stuck by the speaker on the 2nd lift hill. That gets old, quick.

It was interesting walking out, though.

Haunted Mansion at DL. That was a bit uneventful.

Could you imagine getting stuck on It’s A Small World for like 30 minutes or more? I think I would jump out of the boat and start swimming for the nearest exit. 😄

I’ve gotten stuck and evacuated on Splash Mountain after the big drop and before the mini drop leading into the final room. (next to that one small waterfall on the rocks). Interesting to say the least. Got to see the backstage areas and where some of the logs sat outside the building. They were very strict telling people to stop recording and taking pictures so I didn’t even try to.

That is great. Something to always remember.

The wheel from the safari truck by Kevin, on Flickr

That is one of the tires on our safari vehicle at AK. We ended up having about a 90-minute safari! (We got stuck right where you go into the elephant area so no other trucks could get around us either.) A typical Orlando storm popped up and we got to watch 2 guys try to change the wheel in the pouring rain (the first jack they brought was not big enough for a safari truck).

It was very memorable - they brought out a couple zookeeper CM's and one of the AK executives to answer questions and keep us entertained. A couple years later one of the safari drivers mentioned that they use that incident as part of their training.

Happened to me for the first time last March on the people mover. We sat there for quite some time and then they made the announcement that someone would come to get us to evacuate. We walked down the path beside the people mover and exited in the gift shop located nearby.

The haunted mansion was broke down during my visit so did not get to ride. Bummer!

@Kevin_W That is definitely something to remember forever and it is great you got a photo.

@MissViv That is exciting. I have always wanted to walk out next to a ride. Well that is why I made this thread to hear all the stories. :)
It seems the Haunted Mansion breaks down a lot.

Its funny because for as many times as I've been to Disney parks and how many times a ride has stopped I've never actually had to be escorted off behind the scenes.
I did have to be pulled by CMs at the end of Space Mountain a couple of times when it broke down but did not get out of the ride vehicle until it was back at the unloading area.

With that said I did have to be escorted off King Kong at Universal back in the early 90's.
It was our first time on it and I remember walking down some stairs and out the door mid ride.
That definitely made it more fun than scary for all future rides on it lol.

I know exactly where you are coming from Queen of the WDW Scene. I have been on multiple rides that have stopped a ton of times only to start up again. I think The Haunted Mansion and Spaceship Earth are the ones that have done it the most for me. I have never had to be escorted off a ride though.

Personally I have a long list of evac experiences from Space Mountain, Haunted Mansion, PeopleMover, and more.

One thing to keep in mind also is that a ride stop and evacuation is not always a result of a mechanical breakdown of the attraction. Sometimes there is a guest issue at load or unload that will take so long to recover they choose to evacuate the attraction.

For example, I was evace'd off of Grand Fiesta Tour in Epcot one time. The individual in the water with the waders told us that a guest had fallen at unload and was injured. I later saw video on Twitter that it was quite a significant head injury. Assistance of that guest was going to take some time, so they opted to evacuate the attraction. In our case, we had just passed the three screens on the left. When they got to us, we went up a stairway on the right, and through a door, that dumped us immediately outside when the door was opened.

Maybe you can give me some of your evacuation luck. :) Yeah, I understand that sometimes the continuous moving rides stop to assist guests that are using assistive devices to get on the ride and they have to stop the ride or like you said someone has fallen.
