Ride Removal

My girlfriend and I were discussing why they remove rides to put in new ones. What do they take into consideration when they say: "Hey, lets put in mission space and remove horizons" etc. Does anyone know the thought processes they go through. Is it attendance droppage in the ride, or new technology?

Id love to hear what you all think

I would think attendance is a major factor. If attendance is low, then they would be paying to upkeep and maintain a ride for minimal people. It wouldn't make sense to spend $ on something that doesn't have good attendance.

If attendence is the key, I'd love to know what the numbers for Journey Into Imagination were. I never had a short wait on that ride! Maybe Disney needs to check out the lines when the park is open!! :hammer:

They go by popularity and the amount of people going to the attraction. They also can see that a ride like Mission:Space will make more people come to Epcot than Horizons would.

Also the thing with JIYI was that there was a statement in the Disney/Kodak contract that said the ride would be changed in 2000. So it wasn't because of bad attendance numbers, it had to be done.

i wonder if more rides are like that. I mean, maybe some wrote into a contract saying: "lets change this by _________."

I also wonder if some of the mk rides are set to be refurbished after x number of years. Did walt ever say: "i want this done by this time?" Also, i wonder if walt has other things that he wanted to do, rides that he wanted, but couldnt build.

anyway.....gotta go write a paper on non-lethal force for my law enforcement class :brick:

I don't know about other attractions, but I'd heard somewhere that the closure of Horizons also had something to do with the structural support of the building??? (Probably in a post 100 years back!) Or something about a sinkhole? I dunno.
