Tax Increase

Yes when I got the final payment in for my trip, they added extra money on for the tax increase. I didn't know exactly how much it went up to but it came to about 85.00 more

sorry for the confusion on my orginal post, I'm saying in the newsletter I read, the resort tax was increasing from 5% to 12.5%, which is a 7.5% increase. The 11.5% hotel tax we have been paying is made up of 6.5% sales tax and 5% resort tax. This would be 6.5% sales tax plus 12.5% resort tax to equal 19% hotel tax up from the 11.5%. I'm hoping the newsletter was a typo and meant to say the total tax was increasing from 11.5% to 12.5%.
ex. on a $100/ night room your tax would increase from $11.50 o $19.00.

Are you sure the newsletter wasn't refering to this recent story about resort tax revenues increasing 7.5%?: --http://www.orlandosentinel.com/business/custom/tourism/orl-resort0306aug03,0,3546152.story?coll=orl-business-headlines-tourism

Rising room rates contributed to a 7.6 percent increase in Orange County resort-tax revenue in June despite a decline in hotel occupancy levels.

If not, and it's actually claiming the resort tax percentage itself is going up 7.5%, then can you post the text of the newsletter here? Also. tell us what newsletter it is? Who sends it out?

You've thankfully misunderstood that newsletter.

The county that Pop century is in (I'm not sure if any other resorts are) have just decided to up their resort tax to match that of the county the rest of the resorts are in. All hotels at Disney will be taxed at 12.5% once that takes effect. It's a flipping rip off of a tax, but at least not nearly as bad a scenario as you were painting. So on a 100 dollar room the tax is only incresing by about one dollar.

I'm actually suprised that the lodging taxes are so low in this area. I know Dallas has a Lodging Tax that is over 15% and have stayed in other cities where it is as high as 21%. Given the huge volume of tourism, I'm suprised that Orange and Osceola counties haven't tried to milk it for more.

I'm glad they haven't tried to - it makes the resort stay per night such a deceiving number since it will be much more when taxes are added.

This sounds more like it. The three All Star resorts are all in Osceola County with a hotel tax rate (sale & resort tax) of 13%. All the other resorts are in Orange county and up until now the hotel tax has been 11.5%.

Let me clarify...

Tax rate for Resorts in Orange County totals 11.5% for arrivals through August 31, 2006

6% Florida State Accommodation
5% Orange County Accommodation
0.5% Orange County Surtax

Tax rate for Resorts in Orange County totals 12.5% for arrivals September 1, 2006 and later

6% Florida State Accommodation
6% Orange County Accommodation
0.5% Orange County Surtax

This effects all Disney owned and operated Resorts, with the exception of the All Star Sports, All Star Music, and All Star Movies Resorts. The three All Star Resorts are located in Oseola County, with a total tax rate of 13%.

At the Disneyland Resorts, it's 15% in taxes, plus the $11.50 resort fee ($10 + tax).

That resort fee is so stupid since it is "mandatory" according to the hotel. Why don't they just increase the room rate $10 bucks and call it a day? You get all these "extras" which I don't utilize ~ parking, internet, spa, etc.

Actually, the "resort fee" at Walt Disney World would be the county government mandated resort tax ~ it is not for "extra's" provided by the resort. It's the California resorts that add the "extra's" fee, which they call a resort fee. It is not tax related at all.

Do the room only reservation bills actually say resort "fee" on them or something like resort tax? My last AP room only reservation didn't break out the amounts at all ~ just listed a total package amount (which was exactly the total of all nights plus all taxes).

We stay WL every year, and I have never been charged a 'resort fee' upon check out. Never noticed any resort fee on my statements either.

We actually received a letter from WDW a few days ago alerting us that the taxes were increasing in September, so yes, it's true.
