hi all

so i have been to disney twice and stayed at pop and movies . i always plan at least one day in the middle of the week to kind of veg at the pool . both times the pools were clean and nice.

but a friend of mine stayed at pop a few months back and told me threw out her whole stay at least once a day they closed the pool because a child's diaper had exploded and they had to clean it. on her first day there she did swim and woke the next morning with a infection in her eye so ...um i am a little worried is this common? the diaper thing? eww

did i just get lucky when i went before?

i have bugged a few others as well about this and got similar stories .

so should i deepsix the day at the pool lol maybe do a water park instead? i will say i did make a point of going to the smaller out of the was pools on my last stays, less people you know? is that why i missed the problem?

thanks

You should be OK in the Disney resort pools. They use very good sanitary practices.

Just watch out for the bed bugs, lizards, snakes, and alligators.
Also, as soon as you get to your room the first time, do as I do and check under the beds for any dead bodies. The housekeeping staff don't always catch everything.

Pop has 3 pools, the All-Stars have 2 each.

It depends, that's never happened to us in over 12 trips.

see thats what i said it never happen to me either but she said it was like every single day a diaper exploded and they closed the pool i have to wonder if she just got stuck with a ignorant guest staying there the same time as her.

I have had countless stays in Disney resorts and I have yet to see a pool closed for anything other than a refurb. It is also quite probable that your friends eye infection was caused by something other than the pool.

Enjoy the pool.

If money is not an option I would hit the water parks although I would get there as early as possible. By noon the water parks tend to get a bit full.

i would only be going once so i have to wonder if adding it to my ticket would be worth the money though ...maybe just get a one day pass would be easier , with our schedule i would only be able to go maybe one day half a day at most

Well it all depends. One option people overlook is the no expiration option for these extras. $52 will get you one admission at the water parks or DQ for every day on your tickets. When you add no expiration those options never go away. The way the numbers tend to work out it is like buying a block of water park tickets that never expire at about a 25%-50% discount. You also future proof yourself from price increases. It is definitely worth crunching the numbers.

I'm sorry this is an icky post, but this is the topic we are dealing with...

Any time you have a pool that is staffed by lifeguards, as all of the WDW pools are, you are better off than at other pools w/o lifeguards.

It is not uncommon for pools with staffs to be shut down for a "chemical adjustment." (And by the way, virtually anytime the staff at any pool tells you the pool is shut down for a chemical adjustment in the middle of the day, that means someone has either poo-pooed or vomited in the pool. Gross, but true.)

However, if you ever swim in a pool at an apartment complex, country club, or hotel chain where there is no lifeguard on duty you're at much higher risk of swimming in someone else's accident, because they'll often times just leave and not tell anyone. Lifeguards are better at noticing these situations, and generally take action or at least question the suspected party.

Now, having said all that... I would say you have very little to be concerned about. The chemicals in the pool water generally kill most icky germs, except some really stingy ones like e-coli, and the chances of someone swimming with that in their system are pretty low... which is why, when it happens, it makes national news.

Also, IMO, the water parks and deluxe resort pools are just as susceptible as value resort pools to having a small child with a leaky diaper or stomach bug, so you're not really being safer by going to the water park over the value pool.

I don't think this really had anything to do with value resorts or any resort in general. You can have a problem like this no matter where you go. While I don't want to doubt your friend here, people have a tendency to over exagerate when it comes to these situations. One problem somehow seems to turn in to a story of how there was a problem every single day (and we all know we have been guilty of this at some point).

Go to the pool, and enjoy it. If you are really concerned, go to one of the quieter pools at the resort and not the main pool. There are less people at those which just means there is less of a chance of one of the rare situations.

When people have problems at a WDW resort, the response is usually based on the type of resort it is. Problem at Value: You get what you pay for! Problem at a moderate: Hey, at least you're not staying at a Value/should've sprung for a Deluxe! Problem at a Deluxe: Hey, there are problems WHEREVER you go!

A few month ago, we stayed over at the AS Sports resort, and one night, when we planned to use the pool, it was closed due to the said "chemical adjustment". The next day, we were finally ready to use the pool, so I decided on a morning dip. Mind you, I was the first one there. The sign was removed and the pool ready to use.

Before I jumped in, I thought I would ask a lifeguard nearby what exactly the sign meant. According to her, it was 'the inordinate amount of bleach meant to clean the pool'. Just then, she stopped talking, radioed another lifeguard, and within minutes, promptly closed the pool. Now, there was nobody in the pool and yet, pool use was forbidden until an hour later.

Maybe something icky did occur the night before, and the overuse of bleach probably was a cover-up.

But why the sudden closure the next day...? :lookaroun

I found that the Homerun Pool at AllStar Sports had no life guard. As did the quiet pool at the Poly. So maybe its only the bigger pools at the resorts that have lifeguards present.

The only time I really remember ever seeing lifeguards at the pools on the WDW property was years ago at Stormalong bay, where there's the lazy river part and at the slide.

I've stayed at the Contemporary, the poly, Yacht Club, Beach Club and All Star Sports at various times over the years and really can't recall lifeguards at the resort pools with the exception of Stormalong.

Hmmmm. It sounds like she was referring to "shocking" the pool -- adding a large amount of chemical all at once to quickly take care of an imbalance. This is what they probably would have done the evening before. But, since it was closed lickety-split the next morning....

I am wondering if your questions triggered her memory.... Once you "shock" a pool, you then have to go back and readjust all the chemicals to make sure everything's at the right pH, that sort of thing. All I can guess (and this is just a guess) is that maybe she realized she had forgotten to do the re-check and re-balancing of chemicals that morning (after the shock the night before), so she had to do her water testing and get everything in balance before she could open the pool???

That's odd... We've stayed at Contemporary, Poly, Wilderness, AKL, and Boardwalk in the past few years, and all have had lifeguards at the main pool when we went. In fact, we were just at the WL last month and there were 5 lifeguards standing by the pool as we walked by. I noticed them because they were all standing together, and I thought it was funny to see them in jackets and gloves watching over the swimmers in their bikinis.

I agree, however, that the quiet pools don't seem to be guarded.
