When did the arcades switch from payment with coins to payment with arcade debit cards?

Wow. It's been a long time. Come to think of it, since we've been taking our boys I don't recall ever puting coins in the machines. So, at least since January 2004 at POP....:shrug:

They had a reverse effect on us. In the days of yore, (lol) we would head to the arcade every time after a meal at the food courts and use our change--quarters or break a couple dollars.

We do not do that any longer since the machines have switched to the cards YEARS ago.

I'm not certain, but I thought the games took coins in 1996. When I took my kids for their first trip in 2006, they had to use the cards.

It's definitely been a long time. Never really spent much time in the arcades till my DS had an interest in going there every night. And that was way back in the beginning of 2004.
