Renting DVC points worth it?

Hello,
I was wondering if "renting" DVC points would be worth it for my wife and I. We are looking at October. I looked at the amount of DVC points it would take to stay at AKL then and it was about the same price as staying at an All-Star. Has anyone done this before? Pros/Cons? Perks?

My fiancee and I rented points for this coming October. We are spending just under $200 a night (total) to stay at BWV durring F&W. IMO this is a deal that can't be beat. You are getting a deluxe resort for value prices. The only downside is that you do not get mousekeeping every day (which doesn't really bother us at all).

Both Kidani and Jambo (the two buildings that make up AKL) are fantastic and beautiful resorts. Values, IMO, are just glorified motels. While we haven't stayed in a DVC room yet, I can't imagine it being on the same level as a Value.

While I have not rented points before I am a DVC owner. First of all when it comes to AKL you were probably looking at the Value room point wise. Unless that is booked at the 11 month window you probably will not get it. Renting points is a great way to save money . You have to also realize you will not be getting maid service nor will you get fresh towels every day. You will have to make your own bed everyday if you so choose and will only get fresh towels on the 4th and 7th day of your trip. You can pay to have fresh towels if you would like. Make sure you have a contract with whom you are renting from and check references.

I would be going through a site that takes care of that

We rented points for our trip in 2011 - stayed at SSR in a 2 bed villa. While we enjoyed it very much for our November trip we are staying at POR. For a family of 5 who do not plan on much time in room we found it was beautiful yet not worth it. Our stay at SSR was beautiful and we enjoyed the grounds. We found that while on vacation I really didn't want to cook and therfore paid for the dining plan and therefore didn't really make use of this kitchen (which is kind of a waste) For us I think that 2 extra days in a mod accomidation is money better spent. However, I hear AKL is beautiful it is sure to be beautiful and relaxing if that is what you are looking for. Hope this helps but really you need to decided what your ideal vacation looks like.

I have never done it but did look into it a few months ago and actually posted on here. Some people have had great experiences while others had some great points, I'm very hesitant because what guarantee do you have from the rental company, what guarantee do they have that the DVC member doesn't cancel or change your reservation? How do you know for sure your room will be there when you arrive at the resort...

My family rented points from a site online last November for about $12/point and stayed at Kidani in a Value Studio (I think the term was Deluxe Villa if I'm not mistaken). It was fantastic. We spent roughly what Pop Century would have cost us for the week. We were lucky to get the Villa as the reservations go very quickly from what we were told and observed that week. I can't imagine going back and staying without renting points. We go every other year or purchasing points might make more sense for us. It was seemless and there was no stigma or danger in 'getting caught'. Feels just like any vacation you might plan directly on the Disney website.

Another thing to consider is that to book the dining plan you need to give your credit card information to the member to book for you or buy a disney gift card.. I don't think I'm comfortable giving my credit card number to a stranger

Without a doubt I would say rent the point. There are a few cons but overall it's a great way to save buckets of cash. This is as good of a guide as you'll ever see on it http://www.disneytouristblog.com/renting-disney-vacation-club-points/

You will be unable to get a "Value" room at AKV; there are among the most difficult rooms to obtain and typically book at the 11-month window. (DVCs can be booked up to 11 months in advance.)

You might be able to get a "Standard View Studio" at either Animal Kingdom Villa (Jambo House or Kidani Village) for October for 3 or 4 nights. Rooms are still available for a full week in October at SSR and OKW.

Most commercial DVC rental sites charge $13/point, although it is possible to get them for less through less well-known sources, sometimes under $10/point. A week in an AKV Standard View Studio in the month of October costs 88 points which, at $13/point, works out to $163/night, considerably less than the rack rate which can be over $400/night (including tax). There are no "hidden fees" at the well-known DVC rental services. If their price is $13/point, that's what you'll pay.

The biggest negative when using one of the well-known DVC rental services is the cancellation policy. Basically, you have no option to cancel. You should be extremely sure you will take the vacation before booking.

Do they charge any other fees besides the points? Can you use Disney Visa Reward Dollars?

Our upcoming reservation was done through David's. When you submit your request form, you have to pay a $91 fee. That $91 is refunded if they can't find something to your liking or is applied to any reservation that is made for you. After a reservation is finalized for you, you will get the confirmation number, so you can check and make sure everything is what you agreed to. You then get a contract from David's that explains what both the renter and DVC member are supposed to do and what each party is responsable for. You do have to pay for the reservation, in full, at the time it is made which cannot be changed or cancelled at all (those could be 2 cons) but the DVC member only gets half at the time of booking and the other half at the time you arrive at the resort.

As bgraham34 has mentioned, for this coming October, you are kind of late to the game. DVC reservations for October opened up back in November. Value studios and rooms at BCV and BWV are going to be really tough to come by. But to give a little price comparison, we have a preferred Studio at BWV which is slightly more expensive than a value resort but still less expensive than a moderate.
