Some companies do accept debit cards but have certain limitations such as: the debit card having the Visa or Mastercard logo, not leaving the state with the rental, renting only a certain size vehicle, having a driver over the age of 25.

Of course you need a valid driver's license and proof of insurance but also an airline ticket or itinerary. You could also be subject to credit checks or a presenting a recent utility bill for proof of residence. Also, a company might place a "hold" on your debit card until the rental is returned, so you might want to check your daily debit limit.

Just to be safe, I would contact the preferred company to ensure there will not be any trouble at the rental car counter.

Not old, just vintage.
Each company is different as far as their debit card policy. It is also important to note that many companies require a hefty deposit when you are using a debit card. Basically they will require you to have something like $500 in your account that they will hold on to while you have the rental. Then they charge you the agreed upon rental amount on top of the $500 deposit. If you return the car in one piece you get the $500 back. You just have to be prepared to show up at the rental counter with a spare $500 in your account that you can't use for food, souvenirs, or other expenses during your vacation.

This is all we ever use. If it has a visa logo on it, it is treated like a credit card but comes right out of your bank account. We never have a problem using this.

As mentioned in the link I gave, the rental car company *may* require you to show proof of a round-trip flight when you're using a debit card. Otherwise, they have the right not only accept the debit card as payment upon the return of the car, and you'll have to have another card to put as the deposit.
