Remember when they decorated the water tower?

Remember when the Earful Tower at the Disney-MGM Studios was decorated. They painted it in spots for both 101 adn 102 Dalmations, as well as Fantasmic! and I loved when they added the Santa Hat. They haven't done it for years. They sometimes mention on the Backlot Tour that they know the tower's hat size because of that, but they never mention why they stopped. What ever happened? Does anyone else remember?

I always wondered that same thing. I know after 9/11 they stopped doing a lot of stuff.. Maybe due to lack of attendance? I remember they also use to have a parade for every movie that came out, now we see the same ones time and again..!

I remember that too. I think they stop it because they moved the Xmas lights to another area the hat was always the thing you could look at when you were at the lights.

im guessing that they stopped because it is no longer the "symbol" of disney-mgm studios.

Just my guess, anyone??
I'd second that. Since the Big Hat is the symbol of the park now, perhaps they just don't feel the need to decorate the Earful Tower any more. Which is a shame, 'cause I prefer the Tower over the Hat. Alas...

I remember seeing the santa hat in previous years. It was not there on my last December visit in 2004. It was kind of sad, all the parks decorated for Christmas and the poor water tower lacking it's hat :(

I saw what remained of the santa hat back in May 2005 during the Backstage Magic tour.
I think basically it was in need of being rebuilt and as the water tower is no longer the icon for MGM (now the sorcerer mickey hat) it wasnt worth fixing the santa hat.

When I went on the Yuletide Fantasy tour this past December, I specifically asked that question. When there was a downturn in tourism they didn't put the hat up because it costs $30,000 to crane it up and another $30,000 to crane it down. And, when they were going to put it back up a few years ago, when they pulled it from storage, they realized that it was too damaged and they would have to replace it and didn't want to spend the money on it. I feel it is a real shame, I always thought it was so neat to see it. It's one of those little special things that has been tossed by the wayside in recent years.

It was most likely, they got tired of spending the money to put it up every year and tired of spending money on maintenance of the hat . Not to mention it was nothing major to the park, just a very nice, little (not literally  ) detail that was nothing major for the park. So why spend the money on something that is really not bringing in the guests and really doesnt affect the park at all.

I do miss it though, so much of the Christmas decor that used to go up doesnt anymore... :(

I think they should just put a poofy white ball at the top of the hat, put some poofy cotton looking decoration around the bottom of the hat and send a red light up the side of it.

Wow! I was actually wondering if it was becoming too expensive and if it was damaged. It's a shame that they don't do it anymore. Even though it is not the symbol of MGM anymore, you could see the Santa Hat from the road...it got you into the Christmas mood.

It was also cool when they decorated it for Fantasmic! by painting it blue to advertise the new attraction by the road and it was cool when the Dalmation movies when they painted it with spots with the Santa hat

Any reason why the Earful Tower isn't the symbol of the Studios anymore?

Ever since the 100 Years of Magic Celebration, the Sorcerer's Hat has been the focus of things now. I thought it was just for the 100 Years and they were going to focus back on the water tower as the logo when the celebration was over, but the hat has become so iconic, it has become more synonymous with the park over the last few years with more recent guests.

Great picture. I like the look. They should do it like that.

Yeah, like they said, the Sorcerer's Hat has become the new symbol since the 100 Years hullabaloo. But I gotta say, I really wish it hadn't. I think the Earful Tower was better not only because it was unique, but because it was a little nod to movie history (water towers on backlots). Plus - to me, anyway - the big hat really screws up the setting when you walk into the park. Where you used to be able to see the Mann's Chinese Theatre at the end of Hollywood Boulevard (which fits with the theme), now you just see a big blue hat with ears. Sure, it's a reference to Fantasia, but I think the theatre was a better movie-themed destination.
