In our defense, we were flying carryon-only and space was at a premium! And our mugs from the previous trip (which were identical) were still sitting at home, unused, since we'd brought them back 2 years before...

I've read on other boards/FB that these handles work ok but they're not a perfect fit and there can be some "sliding" of the Disney mug when using it. I'm sure Disney will be happy to sell us their own customized version of this handle that fits their mugs/tumblers perfectly. :D
If you put your thumb over the top of the lid, wouldn't that take care of the sliding? All those mug handles need is an adjustable little claw-ish overhang that goes over the lip when transporting it via backpack.

We might, but I think we may be skipping Disney again next year and going to Universal instead. Pretty sick of all the closures from Disney and the lackadaisical attitude with which they are erecting new things. Then the GMR is going too?? Last straw. We may be waiting a while before dropping thousands on Disney again. Though we are going on a Disney cruise (4 day) next year. Do they have these handle-free mugs on the ships?
Totally fair. If you don't like what a corporation is doing, the best way to let them know is money.

They're re-adding the handles soon. Is it just me or are the handles smaller in the pictures? That should help for putting them in cup holders

I am not surprised. I can not imagine that many people(especially those with young children) were happy about this. It was a really dumb idea from some pencil pusher trying to save a few bucks. Which is nuts because $17 for the much more then pays for it and the refills you get.

I vote for keeping the handle simply because it,s so much easier to carry several filled mugs at once. The main purpose is to use them while on vacation and secondary is to have a souvenir. I have many Disney non handle mugs from prior years at home already. This mug is for vacation use first. To carry additional add on gimics that sort of fit also makes no sense. ( not a bad idea at home I suppose) . I frequently throw the mugs in my back pack so that I can stop at the fountain at end of the day without going back to the room to get the mugs.

Funny, everyone talks about the car cup holders - I find the handles a pain because I can't stack them in the cupboard!

I realize everyone wants to believe that the decision was solely based on a cost-saving measure, but I ask you to think outside the box and consider that the decision might have first been taken for more operational reasons - such as storing the stock of mugs was taking up too much space. Envisage the size of a box necessary to store a gross of mugs (144) with handles and the size of a box needed to store that number without handles - I would imagine that it would easily be at most only half the size. For a variety of reasons unrelated to the mugs, storage space has become a problem and now I find out in the same amount of space that I could store 144 mugs with handles, I can now store 288 without handles. If I were the decision maker, and someone presented this to me I'd think it was a pretty good idea - all the more so as I find it a pain to store the mugs in my own cupboard because I cannot stack them AND because the maximum number I would need to carry (with or without handles) is 2. So as the final decision maker, I'd say OK to no handles, without ever considering the fact that there are actually people that feel so passionate about the handles. That being said, again, if I were the decision maker, I would consider the possibility of stocking mugs again with handles when the time for reordering mugs came due - meaning that I would have to determine whether having no complaints about mug design weighs against my operational gains. As I am often telling my child "it's not always about you" ;)

Except the mugs with handles comes in the same exact size shipper as those without. I believe these are the two styles in questions -> http://www.whirleydrinkworks.com/productinfo.php?prod-code=CM-16&cat=jw&sub=c and http://www.whirleydrinkworks.com/productinfo.php?prod-code=CM-16H&cat=jw&sub=c If you check the details you can see they ship in the same exact size box, the only difference being the shipping weight. Unless WDW removes them from the box and stuffs the mugs in nooks and crannies (highly unlikely) there would be no real difference as most people store things in the shippers until used.

I still think they should have simply had a removable handle to go along with the newly designed mug. It would have given both camps the choice of handle or no handle.

No handle, but invent a clip on handle that can be purchased separately for $3.99. Seems like the way Disney would "handle" it.

On the subject of the cups...Anyway to order the cups before arriving at the hotel?

Other than buying them off of eBay, don't think so. And why would you want to? They only work at the hotel, and unless you have the misfortune of making your first stop during a massive rush at the food court, shouldn't take you more than 2-3 minutes to buy and use.
