Real ID's?

What is the story with the new drivers licence you will need to fly? I think they are called REAL ID'S

They are being phased in over the next few years. Here in NY they already use most of the ideas so we don't have to update.

Some people are for them and some are against them...
If you do a Google search you will come up with all the info.

As a foreigner, I fly with passports. Actually, domestic flying here with a passport is a lot smoother than with "acceptable" other IDs.

There is talk of some form of "super-driver's license" that will incorporate citizenship for cross-border travel being planned between the Mexican/U.S./Canadian governments...

Real ID... just another Big Brotherish move that doesn't equate into security in any way shape or form. I oppose it on the grounds that ID has not, does not, and will not ever equal security.

If you're from a state that has rejected Real ID, expect a secondary search any time you fly with your license... or get a Passport/Passport Card.

And Monty, the US starts taking applications for the PASS Card on 1/Feb/08

It's only for land crossings and U.S. citizens, Canada is balking at creating their own. Mainly because it won't cover other means of travel.

I think it would be priceless if CBSA refused the PASS card to enter Canada....

Well I be ok to fly on May 1-12 2008 with my regular PA drivers licence?
THANKS!
Yes.

The noncompliant states (and those that have gained the most respect from me) are:

Maine, Montana, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Washington

If I recall, the effective date was moved to 2011. What's funny is that the Fed. Government threatened the non-compliant states that their citizens would not be able to board planes without those IDs. What's funnier is all the airlines would go bankrupt that first day, so it's not scaring them.

Anyway, it won't take effect, if ever, for a few years. But if you have a passport and are still concerned, then you should bring that.
