Trip Report Reach out and find your Happily Ever After! *COMPLETED*

A lifetime of dreaming, a year of planning, a hurricane, and a slight MODification left us with one week to plan a whole new trip... so we said Bring. It. On.

Who: Me, J, and 1 year old Baby Boy.
What: Baby's 1st Walt Disney World trip!
When: Original: August 31st-September 7th. Actual: September 7th-September 14th.
Where: Port Orleans French Quarter
Why: 2 years ago, J and I were at WDW... enjoying our time as always, but wishing we had a little one to share it with. Well, now he's here, and he's in for the time of his young life. So without further ado, let the memories begin!

As you might have surmised, Hurricane Dorian threw us for a loop. My Pre-trip Report has the details as it unfolded in real-time, but long story short, we traded a great rate at Pop Century for the next most-affordable option available, which was French Quarter. Peace of mind, only a few days of delay, and a brand new experience for the three of us to share made it totally worth it.

For the most part. I am a big Value resort fan, and in the past, have said that I am not a big fan of Mods because of things like multiple internal bus stops, and that the price jump didn't fit our needs at the time. This time was different, however. The whole trip was. But we did miss the automatic doors that Values have... which J was quick to rag on. This would be a running joke for the entirety of our trip.

After 0 minutes of sleep on the flight, Baby fell asleep on me on the DME ride and we transferred him to the stroller, where he continued to sleep while I checked in and admired the fountain in the lobby. Another bonus!

We stopped by Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory to pick up some food to take to the room for when Baby woke up.
DSC04528.JPG

It was nice and quiet, and had a lot of interesting variety of foods to fit in with the New Orleans theme.
DSC04530.JPG

Meals in hand, we headed outside to a beautiful view that we would have plenty of time to enjoy over the next week.
DSC04532.JPG

Our room location was ABSOLUTELY PERFECT. A few steps down Rue D'Baga, a left onto Neptune's Parade, and BAM! Building 2. First floor.

Room 2147.
DSC04536.JPG

Home for the next 7 nights. Cool and pristine. Until we took over, at least.

But, I was informed that "The toilet paper is the same 1-ply quality as Values."

I think we'll be okay. ;)

We had about two hours left before we wanted to head back to the resort. FP availability was more limited than we were used to seeing, so we did some shopping while we waited for our window to open up. Saw this cute artwork again!

And these... interesting bags. So tacky that they're cute.

However, over in Tomorrowland, we spotted an item that we DID want to buy. Baby's beloved Toy Story BALL. Finally found it in Merchants of Venus. The reaction on his face was so sweet and he shook it up and down happily as we rolled away.

Onwards to Buzz Lightyear!
DSC08022.JPG

Despite slim FP availability, I managed to get us on Peter Pan 20 minutes later. We actually got stopped over London so that was awesome!

After that, we hung around the shop outside Philharmagic. Baby kept pointing at himself in the full length (for him) mirror. And the CMs were all over him with adoration.

Maybe we'll be able to go to Maestro Mickey's concert next time.

We had one more ride left in us. It was a favorite...

I held onto Baby tightly as we sat in that familiar boat. Last chance to soak it all in. Impending photo dump coming... it is my hope that one day Baby will be able to read this Trip Report and see how much there is to see, how much he did, and how much we love him. :D

His head against my chest, craning left to right, and up, eyes sparkling and mouth open... was one of the best feelings I've ever had. He is our small world!

Fittingly, the ride ended with a personalized GOODBYE. One more walk out of Cinderella's Castle where we told Baby to say 'byebye' to the castle and he waved.
DSC08065.JPG

The plan was to head back to POFQ by 5 so we could eat dinner at Floatworks, but J is also trying to make 'eating a Corn Dog Nugget Meal from Casey's Corner' a thing. I allowed it because I, of course, was not ready to leave. It was about 4pm and had a decent line, so I mobile ordered right then and there. And I chose apple slices instead of fries (for Baby), which J begrudgingly agreed to. Baby and I waited outside briefly and listened to the piano player. Baby was hanging onto the rails dancing to the music and the pianist gave him such a nice smile.
DSC08068.JPG

A happy ending, indeed. J and I hugged and high-fived on our way out. We did it.
DSC08074.JPG

We bused back to French Quarter with an hour to spare, so we grabbed dinner for Floatworks. I missed out on the pictures again, but I got the Southern Classic - Sustainable Fish and chose three sides consisting of Mashed Potatoes, Glazed Carrots, and Macaroni and Cheese. The fish was salmon and it was really good! I think I may have enjoyed it more than the one I got at Columbia Harbor House. J just got another Shrimp Po'Boy.

We were those people who were reorganizing our suitcases/backpacks in the lobby, trying to make sure we had everything straight for the flight home. I changed Baby into his long pajamas so he wouldn't be cold on the airplane and he looked adorable pushing a suitcase around the lobby while we waited for our Magical Express (it was almost 30 minutes late). But I'd rather hang out at Disney than at the airport!

We thought Baby would fall asleep on DME like he did on the way here (since he also only napped for about an hour this morning) but he did not. And once at the airport, he was practically hyper. Again, pushing the suitcases around while we waited. Our flight was one of the last ones out of MCO that night, so it was pretty deserted. He started to get fussy as I was holding him waiting to board and we were getting really nervous. On our first flight, he was probably a little confused/nervous, and therefore generally well-behaved. But he's gained all sorts of confidence over these past eight days... I didn't know what to expect on the flight. Luckily, our flight was only half full, and no one sat next to us, and Baby ended falling asleep in my arms right before takeoff, not waking up at all. That means that I spent about 2 hours holding a 23 pound baby in my arms, which felt like they were on fire, but I was not going to risk him waking up for anything. What an angel.

This trip was booked before Baby turned 3 months old. Every bit of planning, replanning, and willingness to go with the flow and let it go made this trip immeasurably better than I could ever have imagined a year ago. I have long-dreamed of seeing my child stumble into Mickey's arms or see his face illuminated by fireworks, watching his eyes flicker back and forth between the spectacles. I really think he had the time of his young life, and he did a lot for a little guy. 1 year old and taking on the World just like his parents. It's the beginning of going over and over again.

Thanks for following along! I hope you enjoyed reading as much as I enjoyed writing.

It’s funny how critical ppl are about taking one year olds to the parks but when we took Amelia (8 years ago now), it was the best WDW trip of our lives. Her eyes were like saucers on all the dark rides (HM too 😉) and her oohs and aaahs made us so happy. 8 trips later she still loves it.
Anyway, great TR with beautiful photos. You have those dark ride shots down!

Yes! People should do what makes them happy... and seeing WDW through a child's eye now, and through MANY stages of childhood is how we would choose to spend the rest of our Disney Days!

Plus, they're 'free' right now. 🤣

Thank you so much! I can't take credit for the dark ride photos - that was J but he'll be happy to hear since he thinks they're crap. 😂

With that, we were finished! We moseyed on back to Discovery Island intending to take one last picture in front of the Tree of Life, but we spotted a few CMs that were holding poles.

Winged Encounters?!
Yes!
When?
Like, now!

Front row seats... so excited! Let's do this!

The blue-throated macaw below is the most endangered macaw, with an estimated less than 400 left in the world.
View attachment 414038
We were right in the middle of these macaws flying from pole to branch to pole, getting their treats.
View attachment 414039
The CM was giving an impassioned speech about these creatures when suddenly, beautiful, sweeping music filled the air and we looked up, and seemingly out of nowhere, a ton of macaws came flying in front of the Tree of Life, right over our heads, and back again, landing right in front of us.

I try not to say the word 'amazing' a lot, because I feel like it's overused to the point it loses its meaning. But this was amazing.

J said he got hit in the head by a wing.

And I felt like we hit the jackpot. This perfectly illustrated the beauty of Animal Kingdom, and it was the perfect way to say goodbye. For now! I would love for Baby to see this every single time we come here in the future.
I didn't even know this was a thing! It is amazing and will definately watch out for this on my next trip which is sadly still a year and a half away...

It's definitely a must-do for us from now on! Good luck and happy dreaming! :)
