Ray Charles, who battled childhood poverty, blindness and heroin addiction to help create soul music and become one of America's most enduring musicians, died on Thursday at the age of 73, his spokesman said .

Charles died at 11:35 a.m. at his Beverly Hills home of complications of liver disease. Family members and his manager were present, said Jerry Digney, his longtime publicist.

Well, this should cause less problems than the Reagan thread.

Ray Charles was one of the greatest musicians, who's talent is something rarely found in the singers/songwriters of today...

He will be missed

Unbelievable talent with an infectious smile. He had more talent in his little finger than I could ever dream of having. You'll be missed, Mr. Charles.

Ray Charles

It's not that easy being green
Having to spend each day the color of the leaves
When I think it could be nicer being red, or yellow or gold
Or something much more colorful like that

It's not easy being green
It seems you blend in with so many other ordinary things
And people tend to pass you over 'cause you're
Not standing out like flashy sparkles in the water
Or stars in the sky

But green's the color of Spring
And green can be cool and friendly-like
And green can be big like an ocean, or important
Like a mountain, or tall like a tree

When green is all there is to be
It could make you wonder why, but why wonder why
Wonder, I am green and it'll do fine, it's beautiful
And I think it's what I want to be

I will miss him, but at least we still have his recordings.

His "America" was downright inspiring. I think of "Georgia on My Mind" when I drive through it on my way to WDW!

I also liked "Seven Spanish Angels" that he did on his country album, with Willie Nelson. It seems that he was criticized by some black musicians for doing country. They called it endorsing "their music," but he was said to have had nothing of this attitude and stood strong in crossing the perceived cultural barriers, to great success in Nashville and elsewhere.

He stood for something greater than culture or race.
