Rat Poison at AK

Wow, is WDW that rat infested???

Not sure about WDW, but I saw a Learning Channel show where they went to great lengths to show that everyone in NYC was within 20 feet of a rat. I think there are a lot more rats everywhere than people know. I would be curious to know if this is just a precautionary things or if they catch a lot of rats. It really wouldn't affect me in anyway, but I'm odd and just generally curious about such things.

Well...It's your call, either have rat poison in a place that shouldn't be seen, or have tons of rats...Can't blame Disney for putting safety/sanatation first.

of course disney have a problem with rats -everywhere does!

i have seen rat boxes and other animal boxes around property. i was waiting at BB for a bus and in the bushes not hidden or anything was a black box with a hole in either side.

i have also seen them in AK by the tree of life around by the animals like the kangaroos -they are under leaves and grass but not well hidden.

the boxes didnt have any writing on them.

On any given day, WDW has many thousands of guests staying at their resorts and visiting the theme parks. All of those guests create a huge volume of garbage. Plus, WDW has huge warehouses where they store all kinds of items including some food. These conditions are ideal for rat populations to thrive.

Without rat poison, WDW would soon become uninhabitable. The most effective method to exterminate rats is to use baits containing anticoagulant drugs such as Brodifacoum and Bromadiolone.

So, the answer to your question is no, WDW is not infested with rats. That is only because they have a safe and effective rodent control program in place.

Where I live in Florida, I enjoy feeding the birds in my backyard. I have several bird feeders and I use sunflower seeds as the food. I enjoy sitting on the back porch just before dusk and watching the birds. Sometimes gray squirrels will take their fill too. I don't mind because I enjoy watching the squirrels as well.

Many years ago I was watching the birds at one of my feeders and I noticed a large rat jump from the fence onto the feeder! Then I observed several other rats perform the same stunt. I watched carefully and noticed they ran back to their nest, which was under a shed in a neighbor's yard.

The next day I purchased some Protecta Bait Stations, a few T-Rex rat traps and some rat poison. Within less than a week, the rats were history. Nevertheless, I still keep the bait stations in place and I keep them stocked with fresh bait. Every week or two I check the bait stations for signs of rodent activity and make sure the bait is still fresh. I haven't had a rat problem since. Also, the squirrels won't eat the rat bait.

The only problem with anticoagulant rat bait, especially in AK, is if the affected rat ends up eaten by another animal.

A few months ago, someone tore down an abandoned house a couple of houses past my mom's. Within a week there were rats all in her attic, and every house between. Her neighbor used rat poison and it worked, but a rat ran into my mom's yard and her dog caught it. Within hours she started to bleed out. She immediately took her to the vet and she recieved several doses of vit K and now she is fine.

This could easily happen at animal kingdom as well. I'm sure that the vets there know this and take precautions against it.

One of the good things about these anticoagulants is that vitamin K1 and other coagulant drugs can be given as antidotes for pets (or other animals) that are accidentally exposed to the poisons. The real downside to rat poison is if the rat has it's nest in the attic of your house or in your walls. Who wants dead rats in their house?

I don't care if a nest of rats die under my neighbor's shed. Hopefully, when the smell gets bad, it will teach him a lesson.

If you have rats in your house, you need to use mechanical traps such as the T-Rex snap traps. These are safe and easy to use and are extremely effective. I've used these devices for many years and have never been disappointed.

As you know, during the last two years, the Gulf Coast has had a lot of hurricane activity. After each major storm, a lot of garbage and debris built up and it takes awhile before it can be disposed of properly. Naturally, it becomes a haven for rats. I've spent some time during the last two years exterminating lots of rats.

Don't know much about poison, but that David Hasselhoff photo has to be the gayest thing I have ever seen. What a dork.

How did that comment further the current conversation? (that's a rhetorical question by the way) These kind off color and off topic comments don't do anything for the discussion. I've been noticing a lot of aggressive, sarcastic, mean spirited and downright unhelpful remarks over the past two weeks from many members and its not acceptable. I think that all of us should take a look at our posting styles and maybe not post in such haste. And... if all else fails remember what mom always said, "if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all."

You must have a certain something on your mind, you're seeing things! ;)

Take a look at the full size photo at http://manzam.cocolog-nifty.com/manzam/images/david-hasselhoff-img_2.jpg

The thing you think is something else, is in fact the foot of a dog. And dogs are of course allowed on a PG family friendly site.

Phew!!! I am glad!!! :)

Now, about the rat poison, I do think it is disturbing that they would put out rat poison,,,but then again I don't really want rats in my food either. Surely there is some other humane way to get rid of the rats??? Trapping maybe?

And after they do that , maybe they can get rid of David's doggie humanely too , because he is in a very family unfriendly spot!

funny but true story. There use to be a hidden mickey in the boiler room of the Tower of Terror. there is some coiled up rope on the floor in the center section. I has since been messed up , they use to go and fix it back but non of the cast members will go down there due to the large amount of rats that now live in that area. So think of that the next time you are waiting to take the plunge.

Oh, how nice..

So the hidden mickey isn't visible at all now, is it? If I look down in the section, will I see a pile of rats or something?

I have no problems with rats, myself. My mom is a teacher and has had pet rats in her classroom for over fifteen years, and the kids love them. It took me a while to get used to them, but once I did, I was able to have them walk on my arm and go on my head. But seeing that this aren't tamed rats, I don't even know if I would go down there, either.

But thanks for the information! I will definitely be thinking about this in two weeks when I get to ride Tower of Terror again, haha.

When i stayed at the Dolphin, we saw a few rats in the bushes in the walk way between the Dolphin and the Swan. I have seen rats all around Florida.. no reason they wouldn't have them at WDW. Just think, they do the same thing with rats as they do with bugs at WDW. I have never seen a mosquito while at WDW or many bugs either. I'm sure they spray and bait them just like rats and mice.

BadTigger, I LOVE your avatar! I love Xbox 360! It's [your avatar and the 360] awesome!

At least he has the green lights flashing...would hate to see the "red ring of death" there instead!
