Rank the WDW Dark Rides for Small Kids

Thought this would be fun. I expect the dark rides will be the gateway to the more intense rides - in fact, my DS4 might do ONLY dark rides and the even milder rides this October on his first visit. But IMO getting him to ride a spooky dark ride like HM will be a big step because I think he'll be seeing that even if some things at WDW are a little spooky, nothing will hurt him - it's all in fun. So here are my rankings for the order in which I might have him try the dark rides. Of course, the touring plan will probably blow this all to shread, but... This is sort of a combination of what I think might be mildest to wildest, and also just the order I think might be most fun for him to get into the swing of things. Also, I'm including Jungle Cruise because while it's not dark, IMO it's more similar to all these other rides than anything else.

1. It's a Small World
2. The Seas with Nemo (is this really a dark ride?)
3. The Little Mermaid
4. Peter Pan (I'd put PP before Little Mermaid as probably milder, but I think the fact that the boats are hanging in the air may give him pause for a moment - he may think it's a flying ride of some sort)
5. Jungle Cruise (this could really go anywhere in the first half of this list - not scary, I think my son will LOVE it!)
6. Pirates of the Caribbean
7. Haunted Mansion (a very mild ride of course, but DS4 will THINK he should be more scared than he really should.)
8. Maelstrom (if he cottons on to the fact that there's some kind of storm, he might be scared of this. Also, he went on a dark ride called Ye Old Mill in Rye Playland (anyone know it?) which is sort of similar and the noise and the trolls scared him. I think he's going to associate this ride with Ye Old Mill.)

Am I forgetting any? Oh, that Mexican one - I've never been on that, Pooh, Nemo, or Little Mermaid so those are really all equal and a bit unknown to me. But not very scary, I assume.

If you're worried about how your ds will react, watch the "ride throughs" on U-tube and the Planning DVD or the Behind the sceenes Disney show those might help! Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mom of kids with no fear gene xoxo

^ I'm kind of expecting that the rides I'm not familiar with are pretty similar to the ones I AM familiar with. As I say, it's partly just what order I think would be fun for him to do them in. I guess I think working up to Pirates and HM kind of makes sense. I guess I'm also thinking about the dark rides a lot because I'm expecting he WON'T yet be up to the scarier rides, and the dark rides are going to be the bulk of what he IS able to ride. That, and the stuff that's for all ages and with no height restrictions. Also, I'm hoping he DOESN'T want to ride Dumbo or the magic carpets, because I'm not into rides that just go around in a circle. But maybe he is - we'll see!

Plan on time on the carpets, triceratops spin and Dumbo! Just because he is 4! Getting a pic of him will be really cute and grandparents seem to love those!

^ Oh, forgot TS. Hmm, well it may be unavoidable. But...he's never even heard of Dumbo, and not seen Aladdin. But the photo op is a good point.

Great movie ride scared the bejeseus out of our 2 yr old. We totally forgot to warn her about the Aliens part (very loud and scarry) and she didn't understand what was going on during the "shootout" scene. We haven't been on that ride since.

figmentfan,

Oddly, Dumbo is the only ride that scared my 1.5 year old!! Kept yelling more more for pirates and HM and all but the centrifugal feeling of Dumbo scared him.

We took our then 3.5 year old last May and I didn't even THINK about Small World or Pirates being intense for him (I'd never been to WDW or DL before) and he was fine! He rode everything except Space (too short) and BMMTR (refurb). But we are HUGE movie goers and he's been in a dark theater at least once a month since he was a year old. So dark rides should be nothing if you're movie goers? Maybe? This December we're going to do Space and Tower of Terror (he'll be 5). He's freakishly fearless (I'm kind of leery of Space, haha).

Sorry that This is off topic from the tread but, you've been to Rye Playland? That's awesome considering I live only about half an hour away! I didn't know if anyone else on the boards has been there before, but now I do!

Yeah, we're about a half hour away too! The Dragon Coaster was my first coaster!

Rather than rank - sorry, nonconformist at the moment - I'm going to give you my thoughts based on my kids' experiences...strictly the ones that scared them.

Haunted Mansion - They are nearly 5 and nearly 7 and this still scares the daylights out of them (the older one more than the younger). Of course, they still want to try again to see if they can conquer their fears.

Pooh - They are fine with this now, but when they were ages 2 and 4 and on their first WDW trip, this scared them.

PotC - Our older one is pretty good with this now, especially now that she grasps that we're not really caught in the middle of cannon fire. Our younger one, on the other hand, still gets pretty scared.

You also mention Maelstron, but no fear with either kid at any point. In fact, no fear at any point with any of the other rides. I do agree with @figmentfan423 that watching ride-throughs on YouTube is a really good primer.

I just got back from wdw with my 5 year old son and 2 year old daughter. The first ride for them was spaceship earth in Epcot and they were terrified to ride another dark ride after that. It is listed as not scary, but it's very dark at times, the animatronics can look creepy, and then the backwards part was scary to them. They then refused to get on living with the land (probably a good thing as it has thunder). Winnie the Pooh had thunder. I could only get them to try Pooh and Small world after much begging. They liked Small world, but Pooh scared them too. My children maybe more easily scared but I just wanted to say that you may be surprised at what they find scary and not to push too hard. And I could see Haunted Mansion being very scary to a four year old. But I hope your child has no fear and enjoys everything!

Start with the milder rides and work your way up.

Of course, that is easier said than done. When our 4-year-old daughter got a glimpse of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, she begged to go on it. We tried to steer her toward the Barnstormer first, but she was adamant and convincing. Turned out she spent the entire ride screaming her head off -- with glee! "This is soooo greeeeat!," over and over, with the biggest smile you ever saw plastered on her face. :)

Sounds dumb but my almost 3 year old at the time hated Philharmonic as it was dark and loud. We did get her on IASW but no other dark shows
