Rank the Resorts according to Value

I've only stayed in a few on-property resorts (Contemporary, CB, and A-S Sports). Now, I'm thinking of venturing out a bit and want to try some different resorts. I'm not wanting to overpay for what I get, so I'd like some insight.

Here's what I'm looking for...Rank the on-property Disney-owned resorts (not Dolphin or Swan) based on total value. I'm not looking for the cheapest resorts. What I want to know is what you feel are the best resorts based on what you spend. In other words, list the order of resorts that you feel gives you the most bang for your buck. And please, only rank the resorts you've actually stayed in.

I rank the ones I've stayed in to get things started:
1. Caribbean Beach
2. All Star Sports
3. Contemporary

First and foremost, we are not rich. I have NO IDEA how people stay for a week at the GF, Poly, etc with a family. We just must have a lot less money than a lot of people. Luckily it is just two of us and we save up until we have enough to pay for the trip in cash so there aren't bills hanging over our heads when we get back.

We are trying to stay at every Disney property at least once so this is something we have been thinking about a lot over the years. Not just what is our favorite, but what makes one resort "better" than the others - cost not withstanding.

It is really hard to say which ones give you more bang for your buck because they are each so different in my opinion.

For example, one year we splurged and had Concierge level at the Contemporary which was great. The location of the hotel was great. Our room overlooked the Magic Kingdom and we could watch the fireworks lying in bed! However, was it worth what we paid? We were torn. It was nice. It was clean. It was a cool building. To be honest though, we were somewhat under whelmed. Don't get me wrong, we loved it. It’s hard to explain. I hope you know what I mean.

On the other hand, we stayed at the Boardwalk Inn a couple of years ago and had a room over the Boardwalk Bakery. It could be a little loud sometimes sitting on the balcony with the music coming form the Dance Hall at night. The walk to the elevator from our room was VERY LONG! The pool was sometimes a little crowded. The lobby was always crowded and loud. HOWEVER, the resort has the best location we ever had (in our opinion) and the view from our room was WONDERFUL! The service was top notch (even by Disney standards). Just a perfect place. I would stay there again in a heart beat.

In any event, this would be my list for those I have stayed at:

1. Boardwalk Inn (worth every cent!)
2. Beach Club Villas
3. Wilderness Lodge Villas
4. Wilderness Lodge
5. Contemporary
6. Coronado Springs
7. Dixie Landings
8. Old Key West

I've been to Disney over 25 times (in 21 years no less! I'm not bragging, i'm just seriously amazed at it myself...lol) and Kentear I completely hear where you're coming from financially. I am not rich either (though I wish I was) and although I would stay at the Polynesian every time if I could, it's just not possible. Therefore, I stay at POFQ almost exclusively lately due to atmosphere, cost, location, rooms, etc. Taking that into consideration, here is how I (overall) rank the WDW resorts I have stayed at:

1) Polynesian
2) Port Orleans French Quarter
3) Beach Club
4) Dixie Landings
5) Grand Floridian
6) Wilderness Lodge
7) Caribbean Beach
8) Coronado Springs

1) Port Orleans Riverside- theming of a deluxe, bus and boat transportation, and plush rooms.
2) All Star Movies- cheapest category resort, over-the-top kids' theming, Disney transportation, one of the most Disney-feeling resorts. How could you not feel like your at Disney when staring at the Mickey Mouse pool while walking back to your Toy Story building/room.
3) Tie- Wilderness Lodge and Animal Kingdom Lodge- Cheapest of the deluxe resorts with arguably more theming than any other resort on Disney property.

resort ranking i have stayed in

Combining the best experience and worth the money I would rank;

1. AKL-I am actually surprised I am saying this. Before I stayed there, I would have thought I would have hated this resort, however, the themeing is wonderful, the pool with the zero entry is fantastic to lounge in, the snack shop on the bottom level by the pool (I have forgotten the name of it) is relatively cheap, the rooms are very clean and nice and go along with the themeing excellent. I have stayed in the conceirge level (to me NOT worth the money), the deluxe savanah room (it was cool to sit on the balcony and see the animals but not worth the extra $$), and the standard room overlooking the parking lot. The rooms were all the same and I would in a second stay in a standard room every time. The resort has so many places to sit and see the animals you don't need it in your room. The bus service is great and the only stop is where you are going and then only to your resort. Our room was under $150.00 and we LOVED it!!!!

2. Yacht Club-Swimming area, and location. Also-Beaches and Cream!!!

3. Beach Club-same but a lot more busy it seems than yacht.

4. Wilderness-theme is wonderful and prices on a standard room is surprising "cheap".

5. Grand Floridian-just is awesome and beautiful. However, NOT worth the extra bucks but fun for a night at least once.

6. Coronrado Springs-HATED it. Much, much too spread out, didn't like the swimming, and bus service not as good as other resorts.

To me it all depends on what section of Coronado Springs that you've stayed in. The first time we stayed in the Casitas section( which has a very urban feel to it.) and I hated it. The 2nd time we stayed at Coronado was in the Ranchos section which is the best themed( IMO ) of the 3 sections.

So which section did you stay in?

I think the best value would be any moderate resort, or one of the Lodges (which I consider a moderate deluxe)!

The values do not offer enough for the pricetag, and the deluxes carry a through the roof pricetag for most amenities that can be mimicked at a moderate. Moderates have super, all encompassing theming, ample room space, great recreation options, convenient food courts, pools with slides, and double sinks.

Having said that, we still select Yacht Club if we can garner an AP rate b/c of LOCATION and convenience, but wouldn't have any problems at Caribbean Beach sometime later down the road.

Let's see... I'll put them in a list as I remember them, and then number afterward ;) (Note: Ex-CM who enjoyed free and extremely discounted stays - but I know the "retail" price of the places.)

AKL / WL - My two favorite resorts. I think both are great, but only with an upgrades view, Courtyard at WL, and Savannah at AKL. At WL, the view isn't as important, but it's worth the upgrade. At AKL it's essential and I wouldn't stay there in Pool or Standard view. With an AP discount or other offer both these places are wonderfully priced.

Coronado Springs - My favorite moderate resort, I've actually been wanting to stay here instead of some deluxe resorts just because I haven't recently. I think it's pretty, the rooms are quiet, and it feels laid back and uncrowded.

Pop Century - Wonderful value for a nice room with some neat stuff to look at. It's ranked high jsut for being very well priced for what you get. Nice service, just not many amenities offered.

All Star Music - Similiar to pop, but a little more boring. Worth it for a weekend getaway on a buget.

Port Orleans Riverside - Quaint, but I was in a bayou building without much to look at. The room was fine, the service was fine. It wasn't exciting at all for the price though. I think the Magnolia mansion-style rooms would be much better.

Contemporary - Tower room, MK view. When i spent a few nights a few yars ago, the mold in the air system took its toll on me. It's an old building, it cant be helped. I loved the view, seeing the TTA, and now with the new room designs i'm dying to return with a bottle of Allegra-D. Lobby, concourse, etc, need rehab, but that's coming. In short, I like the place, but it's pricey.

Polynesian - Meh. My room was nice enough, but not really interesting. I don't dislike the place, but on my budget it's not worth the money. I heard about entering and getting a Lei - never happened to me. Essentially every little Disneylike thing they could do never happened. Nothing special from mousekeeping, etc. Oh, luggage assistance lost a bag of my friend's after we forgot to tip him at 7am (we were bleary eyed - sorry!) for a transfer to WL for the second part of our trip. WL found our bag, at the Poly, I quote "...tossed in the corner upsidedown, but we found it!" Tip your porters folks!

WL Concierge - This get it's own category because it's so differently priced. I liked the services offered, but i didn' use many of them. I don't have a reason to. Someone bringing me up was nice, and so was the staff/food/etc, but it's just expensive. I don't need concierge for my budget. Beautiful views from the top level - one complaint, the connecting room to the presidential suite was mine. You can hear everything that goes on in the suite though - foo.

All Star Movies - Crowded and loud. More noise in my room from other rooms than any other Disney resort. I found the theming totally not up to the hype. I'd rather be at quiet Music, or better yet, at Pop with real theming.

Carribbean Beach - I was in a hot pink building. That's ok. It has metal roofing thouh, which I think is a cop-out to real roofing. Yuck. The colors in general can best be descirbed as garish. The resort is huge, and the walkway across the lake in the middle is neat, but overall I was not impressed. I wont stay there again.

Saratoga Springs - Studio room, which translates to "you can't fit a small rolling bag between the foot of the bed and the wall." The rooms were the most cramped I've ever been in on property. We had two people, but as friends we wanted our own beds, and the foldout was a joke. It barely fit in the room. We had to climb over the beds to navigate the room and though the front desk was great, the room itself sucked. Also, housekeeping got snippy when we asked for sheets for the foldout, ans tried to clear us out of the room at 7am! Not worth the price at all.

Grand Floridian - Absolute worst experience ever. I paid less than half of rack rate, and I was so bitter after the experience. I had Disney actually apologize to me, from Team Disney, for the experience. Worst resort ever and a complete rip-off. The rooms are small, dirty/old, light fixtures broken, views of nothing, air conditioning in the main rooms doesn't work, I could go on.. House keeping not doing their job, front desk hanging up on me when i just called to say I'd be checking out earlier than my requested late check out, rooms guaranteed at 3pm but i didn't get one until 5pm (If ANY disney resort tell you it's 5pm, tell them it's a blatant lie and call Team Disney - it's a lie LIE LIE!!!!! Still angry about that...)

Well 1st, the best value for us is having DVC. :)

Then not talking about DVC rooms it really depends on the deal or code you get. This makes a huge difference.

We once stayed at AKL for 129 a night. What a deal. Lovley resort, good busses, so much for your money. As others have said WL can be a great deal, a deluxe resort for only a bit more then a mod often.

I don't think the monorail really adds that much value to a resort anymore. It is just getting too busy and crowded. So many people on the resort line that aren't actually going to the resort it has become a major problem.

Having said that we stayed at Poly for 189 a night Dec 2001. That was a great deal, wonderful resort. Nice large rooms, great theming.

We love Y&BC. I think you get the best for your money with the location, theming and exceptional pool. Close to 2 parks, other resorts for their amenities too. Walk home from Epcot is priceless. As DVC members we love staying at BCV, it is our 1st choice (but we own at VWL.)

Mods, Moderate resorts are a great deal all around as others have said. You get a lot for your money. (and romantic theming to boot!) We like PORS, but that really is just a mater of preference. Our list goes PORS, POFQ, CSR, and last CBR.

Never stayed at a value, hear they can be a great deal and a good way to stay on property and get all the perks of that with a off property price. We always seem to go during times I think values might not be the best place to stay (College spring break, Grad nights, cheerleading conventions........) But other then that it seems "safe."

Completely agree. We will usually have a meal at a monorail resort then take it to the MK. Being we only vacation during school breaks, the World is crowded all over. Sitting in a darkened cabin for 5-10 minutes like cattle is not fun as we wait for the "clearance" to move ahead b/c of busier than normal conditions. For us, the monorail has really been nothing but inconvenient, and we much prefer the walk to and from Epcot/MGM from Yacht Club.

Our best value, too, was 189/night back in 2003 at Yacht Club, but during HOLIDAY season!! Out of control!

So much depends on what you're looking for in a resort. Personally I love the mansions end of POR, but others prefer the bayou part. We've had good and bad experiences at CBR, but it was a great place to stay when our kids were young. I love the Beach Club, except for the fact that our balcony held exactly one person. GF was way overpriced IMO.

I was expecting more people to endorse PO Riverside. I encountered a post around here where several people said it was like staying a Deluxe resort for a Moderate rate.

I totally agree with you during the rush from MK at park close. Everyone seems to leave MK at the same time at night and it can take FOREVER to get a train back from MK to Poly or GF. In the morning it's not that bad since people tend to stream into MK over 30 minutes or more and the trains never seemed as crowded. I've also noticed from talking with other guests that people want to ride through the contemporary to and from the TTC. So people seem happy to take the express monorail to MK in the morning and also seem to want to take the resort monorail from MK in the evening.

But during the day, coming and going to MK via monorail is great. Also it makes it really easy to take advantage of the services at the other monorail resorts such as restaurants and GF's spa. So it does add value to your resort stay if you want to come and go to MK at a whim or spend lots of time at other monorail resorts.

I would put CS down lower than other moderates for one reason... it's single sink vanity area. Personal preferances on theming aside, having only one sink makes this resort seem less desirable when you are trying to get a family of 4 ready to go out to the parks for the day.

My order for value would be:

1. Wilderness Lodge
2. Old Key West
3. Port Orleans Riverside
4. Pop Century
5. All Star Music

Interstingly enough, that is also the order of what we paid the most for to what we paid the least.

If we can't afford WL for the entire trip or at all, we have stayed at the others and had a great time. But if the funds are available, that would be our choice.

Here's my list for the most value for trips:

1) AKL - amazing food, amazing theming... It takes you away to another world! That being said, the concierge level is ridiculously expensive (on par or more than Poly), which is disappointing.

2) POR - Great resort, especially for the price. However, we don't rank it higher simply because it doesn't "transport" you the way that the AKL and WL do (which is why, IMHO it is still not a deluxe). That being said, we have no complaints about our stays here and the service and amenities have always been top-notch for what we paid.

3) WL - Another beautifully themed resort. The only reason why we didn't rank it higher is because we can get a reasonable facsimile of the WL in some of the ski lodges around Montreal (Château Montebello, for example), so it's not as "special" to us. That being said, we would have stayed there again in a heartbeat this summer if the rates would have been lower (ergo: not the greatest value to us).
