Quirky, cheesy, 1984 promo video...

That video seemed aimed at the 60 and over crowd. Yawn.....
Was kinda cool to see, though.

Not "60 and over" ... adults. It's aimed at adults. Specifically, adults who don't have kids and might not be interested in only visiting the parks. There are plenty of activities advertised in the video that the 60+ guests aren't typically interested in - water skiing, horseback riding, tennis lessons, speed boats, River Country slides, etc. But what you don't see a lot of is children; for the most part, you see adults doing adult things. In addition to what I already mentioned, you saw golfing, fine dining (jackets and ties and no kids at the table), a couple just walking on the beach.*

This is how the resort used to be marketed; before Disney figured out it was easier to guilt young mothers into spending boatloads of money rather than appeal to a wide demographic of people. It's easier to say "You're the worst mother in the world if your kid doesn't ride Dumbo and hug Mickey Mouse this year" than say "Hey, we understand, some people don't want to spend a week straight in amusement parks. But if you come to WDW, we have something for everyone. You don't even have to have kids; look at all the adult activities we offer ..."

*Contradicting my own point (slightly), I'm fairly certain this was the second half of the video - after they had already spent time explaining the ins and outs of the two parks - with plenty of video of children (and adults) having fun.

I absolutely loved that video, and the giant musical-production number at the end was utterly FANTASTIC! My mouth just sort of dropped open and I stared at the screen when it happened, and now I've been humming that song and giggling about it all day long. Thank you OP so much for sharing! :sohappy:

That said, it wouldn't kill Disney to do stuff like this again.

I am just sick of all the current happy-shiny images of Politically Correct non-white-yet-not-quite-ethnic families smiling HUGE smiles while they ride Dumbo with precious-precious little ones with mouths open in awe in a slightly blurry at the edges dream world of sunshine and balloons and magical timeshares. Phew.

That current marketing image that is so forced and corny and cheesy is no less believable than the production number at the end of this 1984 video.

Except the 1984 video used real hourly Cast Members from WDW who had appeared earlier in this promotional video showcasing their particular restaurant, hotel, attraction or location. Didn't anyone else notice that many of the same CM's used in the video segments earlier were there at the end performing in the elaborate musical number? I did, and it was a very clever touch that drove the point of the whole thing home.

The fluffy 1980's hairdos can stay in the past, but it wouldn't hurt Disney to get back to this type of fun and whimsical yet upscale image for their theme park properties. Whoever does Disney's current marketing really needs to be replaced with some fresh thinking.

I watched it with my kids and my oldest daughter said, " Why was Disney only for boring grown ups back then?" :ROFLOL: It actually put my youngest to sleep!
