My dh and I were talking and can't decide if we should take the kids out of school. We have plans for the week of Thanksgiving but my oldest B-day is the week before. So we were thinking about going that week. Which week would be better? I do know that the last part of thanksgiving week well be bad.

For the record, my vote is; No, do not take them out of school. But you will get arguments on both sides of the issue. (many many arguments)

The entire week of Thanksgiving will be crazy. If you are willing to take them out of school, I would seriously consider going the week before. There will be a huge difference in the crowd level.

You will find that the issue of whether to take kids out of school is pretty much split down the middle, with both sides feeling very strongly about their opinion. It is a choice you have to make based off of many things....your personal feelings, the school's policy, your child's grade level, whether they are struggling in a particular subject, etc.

Do what feels right for you. We take our kids out of school for Disney trips for the time being, but if we ever felt like it would have a negative impact we would stop. Also, I used to be a teacher and I had no problems with my students missing school for a trip.

Just do what ever YOU feel comfortable doing, regardless of others opinions!

(I should also add that my son missed a week of school in December for our WDW trip, and not only did he have no problem catching up on the work he missed, he continues to be at the top of his class in all subject areas)

Go the week before if you don't mind the school thing. The week of Thanksgiving is one of the busiest weeks of the year, and can be miserable with crowds. The week before will be far less crowded.

I know this isn't one of your options, but I have been there the week after Thanksgiving when everyone is back to work after the holiday. That may have been the best time I have ever been there, I dont think I waited more than 15 minutes to get on any of the rides at all 4 parks, with maybe Soarin as an exception. I never used a fast pass the entire week. Just throwin that out there.

Well, there have been many, many debates o.k. arguements about this topic on here. I say if your child is a good student then taken them out of school for the trip. My DD is 12 (and in 7th grade) and my DS is 7 (and in 2nd grade) and I have taken them out of school every year for 1 week for our annual Disney vacation.

I've been thinking about this topic alot recently. My DD will be entering kindergarten in the fall, and we will be taking her out for a week for our trip. I feel that this is OK for this year. As for next year, I really don't want her to miss a week of 1st grade, or any grades beyond. If we do go again in 2010, it will probably be the week right after school breaks in June, or just before the start in August. But that's just how I feel.

I think a parents decision to take their child out of school should depend on the grade level, and what that child's grades and capablities are. Is he/she able to make up an entire week and not be behind? Or will he/she be playing catch-up for the rest of the year? Although it's easy to say "Let's go to WDW," education is invaluable, and a trip to the world is not worth it if the child will not be able to catch up.

...just my 2 cents.

We took our kids out of school every year. We always went during a week with a holiday or school break (teacher work days, etc.) so it was less actual missed days. As I look back the kids did not lose a single bit of instruction as we either took some assignments with us or the teachers would tell us the trip would be education enough. We are so glad we did now, for we got years or memories, pictures and experiences that we all shared together.

If you take your kids out of school to go to WDW, the Ft. Belvoir MP's and the VA school authorities will hunt you down, stomp on you, drop you into a vat of pig fat, and then serve you up to some hungry eagles.
They may also hurt you.

Or maybe not.

We are going to WDW next week Thursday - Tuesday.:sohappy: We have 2 boys (2nd & 6th grade). We had debated about leaving Thursday after school to avoid another missed day, but have decided to just leave early Thursday morning. They will only have about 3 weeks left of school when we get back and they haven't missed but about 2 days (sick) this year anyway. Just figured it would work better for us to get on the road 1st thing in the morning instead of driving most of the night.

Well i don't think that if had missed 2 weeks throughout my time in school it would have made a difference and i ended up with A*s and As.

Now if i did it currently in college i think it might...
