Quick embarrassing question

Morning
Given I spent 8 months researching Dvc before buying in this is one basic question I cannot work out.
I just bought a loaded contract with 2016 points banked into 2017, soon to get the 2017 points and of course the 2018 points.
I am selling the banked points ASAP as I cannot go until 2018. So I'll still have my 2017 points (Feb use year). I need 2 years of points per trip.
Ill be going late August 2018. So I assume I can use my 2017 points fine coming in Feb when I book this September.
Here's the question. Do I have to bank those 2017 points into 2018 to use them then, or do I borrow in 2018 into this year as I'm booking this year? I suppose the question is, do the points have to be 'in' the year they are used (so all in for 2018 as that's when I'm going) or available when you book. If the latter scenario, given I'm booking September 17 for August 18, could I sell my 2017 points, use 2018 and borrow in 2019 when I book this September?
Basically I'm wondering if I can sell both my 2016 banked points and my 2017 points and use 2018 and 2019 points thus September to book my August 2018 trip or whether I need those 2017 points for that trip?

Simple answer: Yes, you can "rent" your 2016 banked points and 2017 points and use your 2018 and borrow 2019 points to book your 2018 trip. ["Selling" is the terminology used when buying or getting rid of your timeshare, "renting" is when you have use year points you don't plan on using youirself]

I found a very comprehensive post on the DIS boards that seems to explain everything fairly well"

It doesn't discuss renting points, but explains the ins and outs of banking and borrowing and use year.

Info on renting can be found here: [I'm not recommending this particular site, it's just what came up first in my search]

Hope this helps!

Cheers pal. So the points have to be 'in' the year of travel for the trip, not necessarily available at the time said trip is booked?
Cool I could rent both 2016 and 2017 points and make a good chunk of my resale back and still go in 2018 as planned, or maybe use some of those 2017 points for an even longer trip.

Yes, points are used when they're available. Bookings can be made in anticipation of availability for the trip.

I always like it when someone tells me I'm better off than I thought, I did think I'd have to use my 2017 and 2018 points as I was booking in 2017 but I now see that Use year and current points balance makes no difference to when you can book. Thanks Monty.
