We are leaving in 4 days and this is the 1st time we are using the dining plan. Can someone please explain this thing. Are you given coupons? Do you use your room key? Anyone have any tips using the Dining Plan?

To me the DDP is great. It makes the whole experience so worthwhile. You don't need to worry about food costs and you always eat at a Disney Restaurant. We've used it our past two trips, and even with the new changes (appetizers and tips not included) we won't book a trip without it.

Everything will be done with your room key (your key to the world). When you use a meal you let the server or attendant know that you are usingDDP. rThey will scan your room key and the computer will deduct the meals from your plan. They give you a reciept showing how many of each credits are available, IE, Table Service Meals, Counter Service Meals, and Snacks. You should check around here and on other sites and get a feel for the menu's at the various places at WDW that accept DDP. My one and only complaint was the limited foods that the childrens menu offered.

Hopefully you've booked TS ADRs... with four days before your trip, you may be hard pressed to get into a lot of the more popular restaurants.

Even in slow periods, it is hard to get into restaurants as a walk-up. If you know which parks you'll be in on given days, I would strongly recommend getting on the phone ASAP and book at whatever TS restaurants appeal to you. Try to be flexible on times and you can hopefully get enough ressies that you won't be left with unused TS credits at the end of your stay.

The DDP brochure will help find restaurants and explains the plan.

Thanks MontyMon for the heads up, but yes, I have already made my reservations for each day's table service meals.

In case somebody didn't mention it already, you can keep track of how many Dining Plan credits you have by checking your receipt after you order.

It will always list on there how many more credits in that category you have left for your stay.

That helps to know how much you have left - especially with the snacks!

ENJOY!

The best thing about being on the room key is that our 8 year old DD will be "paying" for dinner. We take her to WDW and she "buys" our meals. We always let her sign the receipts and it makes her feel grown up.

Our only complaint is the limited food on the kids meal too. As they get older kids menus start to vary a little more. For smaller kids it seems to be OK but last year we noticed a change in the kids menu for the worse for us DD7. We will see in a couple of months. When DD gets 10 (probably our next trip around Christmas 2009) she will be considered an adult so it won't be so bad.
