I was thinking about this while I was aimlessly walking about work...

Was Scrooge McDuck's first appearance in a Disney movie in 'A Christmas Carol' or had he been around before that and the name is just a coincidence...

Also, was there any signifance or any reason(s) to using him on DuckTales?

Thanks for the help!

I believe The Carol was the introduction of Scrooge into the Disney World. Why they had him as the boss of Donald is funny when you look at that, then see him as family in DT, but this was before DT was started so....

Yeah. There was a point in using him in DuckTales. Im guessing you never saw the first few episodes so heres what happened.

Keeping up with the background plot of Donald being a sailor, he was shipped out on a ship, leaving Hewey, Dewy and Lewy (Spelling is wrong, I know). And so, Donald asked his uncle (Scrooge, his most imeddiate family member) to watch after the kids while he was gone, and so, began to series.

Actually, Scrooge was created way back in the 40's I believe by Carl Barks, who made a whole mess of comics staring the Duck gang. It was Barks's comics that inspired the series Duck Tales.

Scrooge's first on-screen appearence was in a short called "Scrooge McDuck and Money". This was released in 1967- more than a decade before Scrooge's next theatrical appearence in "Mickey's Christmas Carrol". Another intersting fact about that short is that Scrooge was voiced by Bill Thompson, the voice behind many classic characters of that era including Alice's White Rabbit, Mr. Smee, and Jock from Lady and the Tramp. All other appearences of Scrooge featured Alan Young in the role.

As for Scrooge's name, his first appearence was in a comic book called "Christmas on Bear Mountain" where he was portrayed as a greedy character that hated Christmas, so that's why he was given the name "Scrooge"

What about Webbigail (totally spelled that wrong..)? How does she come into the picture? I guess I never saw the beginning of the series either. :\

I believe she's Mrs. Beckley's Grandaughter.

Im not completely sure about her being the granddaughter (Could even be the neaise) of beakley, but she is connected to her.

But they never really said anything about Webigail and her beginnings and where she came from.

I checked it out and I was right. Here's what I managed to find on a Duck Tales Website:

Webbigail "Webby" Vanderquack of DuckTales became an orphan at an early age and lived with her grandmother, Mrs. Bettina Beakley. When Webby was four, Bettina got hired as a maid by Scrooge McDuck. She brought her granddaughter with her into Scrooge's mansion. Webby quickly earned the interest of Scrooge and his grand-nephews Huey,Dewey and Louie. She started to follow them in their adventures, and they started considering her an unofficial member of their family. Though seemingluy cute and innocent, the young adventuress-in-training has been influenced enough by her new "family" to be quite tricky when she needs to be. A noteworthy addition in a family of adventurers.

The first two-part episode of the series explains most of that (although I seem to remember them revieling that she was an orphan latter on in the series).
