Question for parents of a little princess

I see all the little girls dressed in their princess costumes at WDW especially for the princess character meals and my almost 3 year old daughter wants to do the same. My question is how do you keep them from getting spaghetti sauce, chocolate milk or some kind of food all over the somewhat expensive dress?

we have 2 princesses, but haven't dealt with the whole costume thing yet. You could try a bib or just a napkin to cover the dress some.

We plan to buy the Halloween costumes instead of the super expensive clothes for the girls when they are older. Then I won't care so much if it gets messy, at least it wasn't $50.

Have fun, we leave in 57 days

If your little one is anything like mine, the more special you can make it the better. Perhaps you can buy a cloth napkin somewhere like WalMart or Target and iron on a princess graphic or something sparkly (they have a lot that were on clearance in the craft section in Walmart....rhinestone crowns, etc.). The more special it is to them, the more likely she will want to wear it not to mess up her clothes because it's still pretty, kwim? It'll cost all of $5 at the most, but definitely worth it.

We're just taking a few of our DRESS up princess dresses, I LOVE the idea of decorating some bibs, what a fun project!!

Walmart has a FEW even cinderella for only like 16bucks! We got some for dd's birthday so we're set but I'd sooo get at least one from there if we didn't have one, I couldn't buy one from Disney. Too $$$$!

Depends on when you are going, if it's after halloween, try the clearance rack for the princess costumes as soon as Halloween is over. Can get some great prices that way - even at the disney store online site.

Ohh, this got me thinking: I think I'm going to get some PRETTY ribbon and make a Long string of it. Put Velcro on each end and create one of those rope things for kids, yk the ones that you place on their wrists and you get the other so that they won't loose momma! Anyway I thought it'd be GREAT to let HER decorate the ribbon so that it'd be something SHE'd like since she made it. I normally just make her hold my hand but who wants to do that at Disney?? LOL I love this idea of decorating the bib too I can't wait!!

I LOVE this idea! She already has the costumes and they aren't the official Disney expensive ones but she loves them so I really don't want them to get ruined. However, realistically I know a almost 3 year old is not going to come away from dinner not getting food all over her, thanks so much for the idea!

Or if worse comes to worst, you could always keep an extra change of clothes for her (like a regular dress, or shirt and shorts) and change her during any non-photo intensive meals (aka non-character sit down or counter service meals) that you feel she can change out and back into after her meal is done.

My daughter refused to wear her new dress- only wanted to wear the beat up- dress up box one 2 sizes too small. Believe it or not... she got lots of extra attention from everyone commenting on her "much loved" dress.

Hi

You should buy some cheap princess costumes. Price does not matter, if you have enough resources. The matter is your daughter looks like a princess. Decorating some bibs, a great fun.

I decided that the napkin was too small to cover most of the dress and I would make her a "princess" apron. It covers the front of the dresses and is washable, if I need to wash the apron. Here's the ending result:

She loves it and can't wait to wear it!
PS -if anyone wants to do a similar thing you don't actually have to make the apron, they have child size aprons in crafts stores ( I just couldn't find a pink one)

CUTE apron! All the disney dresses we have including the one from WDW are machine washable. So you could use the tide wipes as another poster suggested and wash when you get home. Even use woolite in your hotel sink.

I have found really cheap princess costumes at disney.com (after xmas and after halloween are good times) and the Disney outlet in the mall if you have one. I once got a tinkerbell costume for $4 and light up wings for $2 at the outlet. It was quite a steal!

That apron is adorable. What a cute idea. :sohappy:

When we do princess dresses we normally wear them over a tank top and shorts, or bring changes of clothes with us. If it is cold we wear them over long selves and pants. The tank top and shorts can help if it is itchy and sweaty since they are normally cotton.

My oldest doesn't normally stay in it all day. I was really surprised when my then 3 wear old wore Tinkerbell the whole day. It was so hot but she did not want to take it off. It really makes for some cute pictures.

I would take them off for meals unless it is character meal you want pictures with.

Take the photos BEFORE the meal (or early into it), and then you (and your princess) can relax and have fun during the meal. Bring a change of clothes for her; those princess outfits can get hot and scratchy during a long day at the parks.

I really like the apron above. Its cute! I did something similar taking a small bath towel, cut a hole for her head in it, and sewed in a t-shirt collar. Its just like the hand towel ones you see for babies, but it is big enough to cover her dress in the front and sides. Its also nice and thick for all of the wet spills.

Call me crazy, but I would just let them wear their costume and have a blast. If it gets stained, it's not the end of the world.

DD wore her princess costumes on two separate days during our last visit, ate all of her meals in them, and not a single stain! :)

We always carry the dress with us and have our DD put it on before princess interactions. I guess we've gotten lucky since we've had no messes during princess meals.

I love the decorated apron.
