Hi,
My family is going to get a cable modem for the internet because our connection is sooooo slow, but we have one question.
Does cable modem require a working USB port in the back of your computer?
Because our USB port is broken and we don't want to have the person come to our house and find out that we can't get cable modem because we don't have a USB port.
Thanks sooooo much! :D

Most cable modems will have either USB or Ethernet ports (or both). Your best bet is gonna be to use a cable modem with an ethernet port. What this does is connect to a Network Interface Card (NIC). This results in a faster connection between the cable modem and your computer. Using USB uses Windows resources which we all know are very limited.

Bottom line: USB uses resources from windows and bogs down your computer. Ethernet uses resources from your motherboard which has no effect on how your computer runs, performance-wise. Get a modem with an ethernet connection. The only thin is that you may have to purchase an ethernet (network interface card), which is about $15.

Hope this helps!

A lot of internet companies will give you that card for free...just ask...i've had it installed at 3 places now...and they always ask if I want a free card...i say sure, and yank the old one out :)

Now this is card collecting :)

Cable modems are great for college people...no one person hogging a line..we had one modem feeding 6 computers on a network....

...I have the ethernet card too ...got it for free, along with the modem, with my PAID subscription for the cable hook-up!

you don't need the USB thingy.

I would suggest getting Zonealarm. It is a free firewall download, whenever a program wants to access the internet it asks you if you want to let it or not. You can download it at zonelabs.com

Also on the USB question. I wouldn't recommend ever using it, because a lot of modems have a habit of overheating if you use it.

Tramp, just so you know, you can buy a cable modem at best buy, but it's useless unless you pay an ISP to use their service.
