Question about Space Mountain

Hey folks,

I have been on Space Mountain several years. 2006/2007/2009/2010 most recently. When I was at WDW in 2006&2007, space mountain obviously was it's "pre-refurb" self. I remember quite easily that when you were in the queue area, you could look up into the dome and see the various shuttles zipping around with their glow-in-the-dark paint strips. Also, you could hear people screaming on the ride which, in my opinion, made the boarding experience that much cooler!

When I went to WDW in mid-2009, Space Mountain was completely shut down for the refurb. That being said, the PeopleMover was still running and I got a chance to go inside and see everything with the lights on!

Originally pre-refurb, while inside space mountain, the parts of the peoplemover journey that rode over and overlooked the loading areas for the rockets used to be completely open. You could look to the right and see (in the dark) the track and rockets as they zipped around, as well as all the people below waiting to ride.

When the refurb was underway (and also in my most recent visit when Space Mountain was finished) there were massive walls erected around the path of the peoplemover track. You can no longer see the track AT ALL in that area, nor can you see the loading area.

My question is, why would they do that? I thought it seemed to let all the different aspects of the attraction complement eachother because of the way the building was designed (Lineups below, the "view" of the track at night, people screaming ). The only reason I can think of is that it had something to do with adding the music track to the ride - which I ABSOLUTELY LOVE by the way. If that is the case, it's a shame they couldn't have found a way to still keep the music and yet kept the allure of the spectacle.

Anyway, anyone know why?

Cheers,

I like that to, on the other hand the new window effect looking up at the into space looks way more realistic. I always thought the old projections were kind of corny.

on top of what everyone said with the two rooms being somewhat enclosed from one another the new music for the ride doesnt have to compete with the noise of the people in line. Otherwise they would have to blast the music at us.

Nobody messed up.

They did it so that there would be no light coming into the attraction AND because everytime that Space Mountain is down, they have the lights full up, and Disney doesn't want you to see the track all lit up. It's a matter of "behind the scenes" stuff they don't want you to have access to.

interesting fact: the picture of the asteroid that use to be at the top of space mountain was actually a black and white pic of a chocolate chip cookie. back in the 70's there were no pics of asteroids, but plenty of cookies

I always did get an appetite when I saw that repeating asteroid. They look like the cookies my mom makes allot of around Christmas time.

Because they messed up?
Indeed.

Hah! Most of that "refurb" was a "mess up."

Light pollution never came from TTA, only from the load area. That was corrected with the new ceiling there. No good reason to block a large portion of the TTA track inside the mountain.
As for guests seeing the inside with lights on, I don't think that was a factor. You can still see a lot during 101s, plus they never cared during the ride's first 30 years. Why start caring now?

I miss the old days when I used to be able to look down and see how long the line was from the tta. And I loved seeing and hearing people scream. I missed the offboard audio by a few weeks, and I'm eager to hear how it sounds and everything on my upcoming trip.

Not true. That's a myth.

It's sad to know it was actually coral....I like the myth about the cookie.

One thing I have learned through this forum is that paying attention to everything is what I need to do on my next trip. I was so overwhelmed the first time that about half of the little details you guys all talk about were lost to me. I plan on being incredibly observant the next time.;)
