Question about selling on ebay

I was wondering if anyone has ever sold anything on ebay before, I just have one main question because I never have. I have sold things on Amazon though, and the way they do it is you just put the item up for sale and if it sells, they take a certain amount out and then give you the rest of the profit (plus shipping money). At amazon if the item doesn't sell you don't lose any money, it just doesn't sell (at least the way I've done it). My question is does ebay charge you just to put something up for sale in the auction (even if it doesn't sell), or do they only take a percentage out after it sells? In other words, if the item doesn't sell do you lose any money for putting it in the auction, or is it similar to amazon's where they only take the money out IF and AFTER it sells. Thanks for any help.

Ebay charges a percentage of the final price, plus a small amount just to post an auction. Less than a dollar, if I recall. But if you add a certain number of pics, they start charging per pic. And other little extras you can do add to the total.

I have sold lots on Ebay. I recommend several things. Whatever it is you are selling, do a search on ebay and see how much people are bidding on the item, and the items popularity. Check out what the other's page looks like for that item, and see what they titled the item as. Most items that don't offer some sort of picture are usually ignored. So, you will probably want to include a picture or two. Most of the things I sell usually end up running me (for posting the item) about 1.25. If the item sells, you pay a percentage (like 2 percent maybe???Not sure) to ebay. Than (if you will be accepting paypal - which most people use for ebay purchases) paypal takes a percentage of the amount the person pays to you - 5 percent or something like that. If your item doesn't sell, you may relist the item again. Yes, you pay the fee whether the item sells or not. Ebay is a crazy world. I stopped selling things because most of the time, I feel like after all the fess, etc, I am basically giving the thing away. F.Y.I. I used to sell my kids clothes, toys, and other kid things. Good luck :D

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help moriah and nicholas. I may put some of my stuff that I think will sell well on ebay and that I can actually make some money off after the fees. I like amazon because it's free to put things up, but some of my things aren't selling that fast they may have a better chance their, especially the dvds I want to sell. I don't know yet, but thanks for the info and advice.
