Question about room requests

We are staying at the Pop Century in August and when I booked my resort reservations I told the woman that my 6 yr old is handicapped and uses a walker to get around in and requested to be on the ground floor and if possible to be close a pool so he wouldn't have to walk so far to get to the pool. We got the preferred room so I figured we'd be close to a pool anyway so it wouldn't be a big deal. She put all of my requests in and it wasn't until later that I realized just how big the resort is (at least it looks huge on a map). I would love to be in the 60's building because it looks like it's close enough to a pool and also the food courts. My question is can you request which building you like to stay in? And if you have ever done so, do they honor that request? I may end up calling in the morning and seeing what they can do but I thought I'd ask here first. Also for those who have stayed at Pop, which building do you prefer?

Ordinarily, getting preferred buildings costs extra. Having a handicapped member of your party, however, means you shouldn't have trouble getting the room you request. The 60s are the most convenient (IMO) to the busses and food court, but they're also some of the noisiest, due to all the foot traffic.

Do call and put your request in ... Disney is great when it comes to accessibility!

The simple answer is yes.

Be sure and call the reservation center to add any further requests, not the front desk. The call center that answers the calls for all the front desk will just bounce you to the reservation center and maybe not to the correct department.

When you call back, please be sure and let the CM know your preference for your requests. What's the most important? Connecting rooms (if not guaranteed due to party mix)? Ground floor? Closest to the pool? Closest to the food court? Building?

The front desk will do their best to accomodate your requests. You need to give them the information on what's most important as all of your requests aren't likely to be met (only some).

When you put in your request, put in WHY

If you just put in 60's building, you may get 60's but on the top floor. If you just put near pool, you may get near the computer pool on the far end of the resort.

Picture yourself as the CM. He knows nothing about you or your kid. All he sees is "would like 60's room" and thats all he has to go on, so he makes his best guess.

The more detailed information you can give, the better.

Having stayed at Pop 3 times in the last 4 years, most recently a couple of weeks ago, I have put in requests and had MOST of them honored.

When I booked our trip March 14th to 24th, 2009 trip last March through our local CAA, I had them put in for connecting rooms, on the ground floor, facing the pool and in the 90's building (I know, I know, alot to ask for). We were placed there on our last trip 2 years ago and LOVED that whole area. The main reason for us wanting the ground floor is that we take my mother-in-law and she cannot walk up stairs because of a medical condition. So when we arrived last month and checked in, we were told we had 2 connecting rooms, in the 50's section, but on the ground floor facing the pool. Our last trip they tried sticking us on the 3rd floor in the 50's section, facing the lake when we checked in, but we ultimately ended up getting moved to the 90's rooms I spoke of up above, again, because we had my MIL with us.

So just tell them when you phone WHY you are requesting the room and section your are (like Phonedave said) and hope for the best. When you arrive and check-in and are assigned your room, if you have a problem with where they are putting you when they show you on the map of the property, just ask them nicely if they can possible change you to a building more to your liking and they may just oblige you (especially if they are not booked up and you arrive early enough). :animwink:

And P.S., I now LOVE the 50's section and would have no problem whatsoever being put there again on future visits to WDW and Pop Century! :sohappy:

Excellent point. Telling them why you need something a certain way will help you get what you need and make the experience better.

One other note....If you modify your reservation in any way (add or subtract days, etc) you will need to have the CM read back your requests. It is quite common that requests will not follow resort modifications.

I used to always have to make non-smoking room requests because my DH & DD both have asthma. Years ago, when making a reservation, the CM informed me that request for health reasons will be honored. I'm not sure how far they will go to honor your request, but on a first floor near a pool should not be a problem due to your son's disability.

I am disbled. I have difficulty walking. I stayed there in Oct. The resort is huge. I requested a perferred room with the least walking to the pool, resturants and buses. They put me in the seventies, nearest the parking lot. At first I thought it was the worst place to be but the man at the desk told me to try and that he was sure I'd be pleased. It was wonderful. The walk was great to everywhere and when I came off the bus aftera day in the park, I was right there at my room . It was a very short walk to the food court, the pool and the buses were right near my room, which is the hardest when you have been touring all day. After that stay, Pop Century is my favorite resort. They are great with people with disabilites. I have been going to WDW for 20 years, have stayed at just about evety resort and I can honestly say that that room was terrific. The seventies, facing the bus stop and handicap parking is a geat room to stay if walking is your difficulty. I have two deformed hips and can walk for just a short distance. I loved Pop Century.:lol::sohappy:
