It's been a long 5 years...I'm happy it's finally opening with both rides:)

That it has. I'm happy it's opening with both as well. It's going to be nice to have a boat ride (especially through what looks to be an incredible forest of visual eye candy) and a simulator in Animal Kingdom. Walking the park yesterday it really does need more attractions as much as I can entertain myself and stay busy. I'm being greedy but a few more down the road won't hurt either. It's certainly going to be a more fleshed out and complete experience than DHS, even when TSL and SWE open.

Not to derail but when you think it took Disneyland 1 year and 1 day to build (especially amazing if you watch the youtube vids). It really makes you wonder why it takes so long to do anything now. I understand the laws and OSHA have changed some of that but it seems like it takes them forever now. Then again when Disneyland and world were built they had tons of workers a firm deadline with no guests...but still amazing.

That's a common discussion around here. Avatar is on pace for a little over 3 years of actual build time which seems to be the norm with TWDC these days for a new land. There's a number of factors why. Like you said there are more regulations, but TWDC is also dragging the build out over multiple quarters to spread the capital spend. TWDC was more desperate to open Disneyland or a project like EPCOT Center which were huge financial risks. Those projects were critical to the financial success and future of the company at the time. The more recent projects are nice to have but not as critical which is why I think they have less of a desire to go all out and complete them.

That's a very valid point I didn't think about the financial part being spread out. With DHS like it is though, and some of the parks having slipped a bit you would think they would go into a more rushed mode. If they could come out and say star wars land, tsl, guardians of the galaxy, stitch replacement, and a new imagination ride along with some refurbs will be here in fall 2018... can you imagine the buzz...
With these areas (outside journey and figment) these areas are already closed to the public so they could hire a ton of people to accomplish it. But like you said cost.

DHS is a disgrace right now. It's borderline criminal that they are still charging full price for admission to a park that's at least 1/3 under construction. That being said it hasn't hurt business. People still go and they have filled the park with temporary exhibits and events to fill time. If you look at it from TWDC's perspective they would light a fire under their on construction if they felt the park being a giant construction site would hurt business, but if not, why rush. These lands cost a billion dollars to build, but that not a lot to spend for TWDC today. With the original build of EPCOT Center they invested a significant chunk of money compared to the size of TWDC at that time. They needed to start generating revenues ASAP to justify that spending. That's why they threw so much labor and effort into getting it done faster.

The problem is that people are still willing to pay top dollar for star wars and frozen at hs.

Honestly, we are probably lucky they are even building Star Wars Land. People flock to the Launch Bay which is just a glorified gift shop and meet and greet. We're lucky that Iger and his cronies didn't just stop at the walk through attraction, store, meet and greets and a stage show since they are making money from that. I guess the more optimistic way to look at it is if the minor stuff there now draws the crowds that it does than imagine the crowds when there is an actual Star Wars Land.

You know, SWL is really exciting - but then I remember the "full overhaul" of MGM consists of that and Toy Story Land, and I begin to wonder if WDW really has turned a corner or is simply accelerating in the same direction its been heading for a while.
