Question About Buses

We were told in March when parking at the Boardwalk by the gate guard to park at DS and take a bus back to the Boardwalk.
This is not all that uncommon due to non- resort guests coming to the Boardwalk for the restaurants and clubs.

As I understand it, they have a limited area for non-guest parking. Once that fills up, they begin directing guests to park at DS and bus back.

Exactly. And my point was that this was a Disney employee telling me to park at DS even though that is not the place we were visiting. So I don't think there are any hard and fast "rules" that you can only park at DS if going to spend time at DS.

Free parking at both locations though and they directed you to do it. If Disney intended for people to park for free at DS and then bus it to a theme park then they would provide direct transport and they would not charge for parking at the theme parks either.
So let's stop pretending like its the same thing and like we don't know any better.

If Disney had a hard time with it, they'd post signs. As it is, they make it inconvenient, but not impossible. Your saying that the practice is forbidden is simply in your own head.

As stated before; there are no hard and fast rules forbidding it, Disney just makes it rather impractical. This is why there is very limited DS to park transportation. On average, parking at DS and then bussing to a resort and then walking or bussing to a park adds a good hour to the process on the best of days.

Not an surprising response. Just trying to provide some information. I'll go back to lurking now.

The practice may not be "formally" prohibited, but I imagine there are any number of things at WDW one is not supposed to do, even if not explicitly stated.

Disney charges for parking at the theme parks, does not charge for parking at Disney Springs (common for any shopping centre), and does not provide transportation from Disney Springs to the theme parks.

It's pretty obvious that they don't intend for people to park there when visiting theme parks. Yes, people can, but the obvious risk is that parking rules will change in the future if too many people do it.

Not judging anyone, we all bend certain rules from time to time, I just find it silly to argue that this is appropriate use of the DS lots.

It has been, in one form or the other, happening for decades now. The only action they have taken is to not have a direct bus run from there to the parks. If it were a huge problem they would have stopped it by now. What they did do was create massive parking garages so that people that think that parking for free is worth it not only will not be preventing parking spaces for those headed for the retail center, but also making it a long, long walk to the bus stops. I think that the concern about so many people doing this is really overstated. It is a hassle, a lost of a lot of time and considering how much everything else costs at Disney, like walking a mile and spending hours just to pick up a penny. In short, it is not a very popular thing to do. They are never going to charge for parking there unless they want to see a huge revolution from the vendors leasing space in Disney Springs. There are lots of less expensive and high quality places to shop in the Orlando/Kissimmee area so that charging for parking would not entice them to get into all that traffic to go there. DS relies on local shoppers to make the place successful. They don't live by tourist alone.

I also suspect that the merchants at DS would be as unhappy with people being unable to visit DS because the parking is filled with people trying to avoid the parking fees at the parks as they would with charging for parking at DS. We have skipped DS in the past because the parking decks were FULL. Either situation keeps people away from DS.
As some others have mentioned, it is pretty stupid to waste another two or three hours in a day just to avoid a parking fee when you consider the "hourly" cost of the park ticket, but some people are not smart enough to figure that out.
