Individual Project
Introduction
While following the prompt's instructions to keep the exterior the same, Team Dream will be installing a new attraction in Discoveryland themed around the Steampunk flair of the land entitled....
Harding's Quest
Backstory
Main Character - Randolph W. Harding
Randolph W. Harding was a pioneer in aeronautical technology in the late 1800s, 1899 to be exact. When he grew up, he was fascinated with the work of Leonardo Da Vinci and his vision using novice designs for gliders and aircraft. His fascination led him to explore for his works and he stumbled upon a secret island that Da Vinci had envisioned, a reason why he was trying to invent such aircraft to travel there, as it was far away from Europe.
Harding's quest to discover this island and explore, led him to join an exclusive club known as the Society of Explorers and Adventurers, who gave him the knowledge and strength to continue his dream.
Renovation
The interior of the Videopolis and the adjacent quick service restaurant have been dismantled and gutted, to make room for a dark ride experience similar to Peter Pan's Flight. A dark ride attraction that allows guests to simulate the sensation of flight, and flight with one of Harding's inventions.
Queue
As you walk through the queue, you are walking through Hardings workshop building (which now acts as the exterior) The steampunk design is still in full effect, and as you walk through, you notice that he's love for Da Vinci's steampunk designs, is apparent.
The collections on the walls and on the blueprints include trying to replicate Da Vinci's glider...
eventually leading Harding to a rendition of the Automata flying device - this flying device will act as your ride vehicle on the journey.
Ride Vehicle Setup
As mentioned before, similar to Peter Pan's Flight, the Automatas will travel on a track above you and glide around the scenes. The technology implemented in Shanghai, the swaying of the vehicles, will also be seen here for good reason as you will see later on as it is involved in the plot itself. The Automata seats 4 guests, two in each row, comfortably.
Load Area
Similar in design to Peter Pan's Flight, but with a Steampunk design.
Scene 1 - Harding's Go-Ahead
As you are going on this journey with Harding, he gives you instructions on how to follow him, as he warns you he doesn't know what will be on this island, but that's what exploring is all about.
Scene 2 - The Lift Off
You take off of the ground in the Automata and set sail over Paris. You see the city of Paris below you and take off on your journey. An amazing starfield effect can be seen in this scene, along with some powerful music by Michael Giacchino, placing you in the mood, similar to how Danny Elfman's score of Mystic Manor does the same.
Scene 3 - The Ocean
As you soar past Paris and into the Indian Ocean, you see the water glistening below you as you sail overhead. The calmness is only the beginning as the music quiets down from the orchestra of lift off and Paris, to a mellow piano note.
Scene 4 - Something in the Distance
You get closer and Harding, in an AA Automata next to you tells you to sail in, as we are at the island.
As you go in, the large show room that was once Videopolis, opens up into an amazingly large showroom for the Steampunk Island.
You are surrounded by steampunk style blimps, boats, rocks, castles, and designs, showing that the island does exist.
Scene 5 - The Get-Away
After the euphoria is gone, you hear gun fire from the left, as you duck under an incoming plane shooting at you. Harding remarks that we should get out of here, as maybe this is a secret we shouldn't know about, as the planes circle around, you make your escape.
Scene 6 - The Escape
You dodge and sway around incoming ships that are firing at you as a massive blimp arises from the ground and attempts to fire at you as well. You dive down to the ground level and back out of the large showroom.
Scene 7 - The Recovery
Gliding out of trouble, Harding says he has to report to S.E.A. about this discovery and informs you that you can return back to his headquarters and thanks you for traveling with him and being an avid explorer.
You then proceed to the unloading dock and disembark.
Giftshop
Harding's Quest merchandise can be found throughout the exist giftshop, including children model aircraft kits, themed clothes and memorabilia, among much more.
Conclusion
Hopefully this new renovation of Videopolis can turn the location into something that expands not only the steampunk vibe of Discoveryland, but also the Society of Explorers and Adventurers. Especially given the Verne influence in Discoveryland, and ongoing fan rumors that Verne in some capacity may be involved in S.E.A. Perhaps this attraction could sway the story and expand the lore even further in the Disney Parks with Randolph W. Harding and his quest for adventure.
